COLOFAC (Mebevrine)

Colofac Information

Colofac tablets contain the active ingredient mebeverine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called an antispasmodic. Mebeverine works by acting directly on the smooth muscle in the gut, causing it to relax. This relieves painful muscle spasms of the gut, without affecting it's normal motility. Mebeverine is used to relieve symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and related intestinal disorders that are the result of spasms in the intestinal muscles. These include colicky abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea alternating with constipation and flatulence (wind). The medicine is taken three times a day, preferably 20 minutes before meals, as this will help relieve symptoms that are worse after eating. When the symptoms have improved, usually after several weeks, the dose can be gradually reduced. It is used to indicate Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Colofac Warnings

They should be avoided in Porphyria (a blood condition). This is because they can exacerbate porphyra. They should not be used in patients with paralytic ileus (non functioning bowel)

Drug Interactions: Onset of action, quickly within 2 hours. This medicine is not known to interact with other medication.

This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the fetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor. This medicine passes into breast milk, but the amount is considered too small to be harmful to a nursing infant. Seek further medical advice from your doctor.

Colofac Side Effects

Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rashes or severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema)

Very small risk of overdose and therefore is quite a safe drug

Colofac Usage guidelines

135-150 mg three times daily, preferably 20 minutes before meals This medicine is not recommended for children under 10 years of age.
