Iressa Information

Iressa (also known as Gefitinib) is a cancer chemotherapy drug. This medicine interferes in the growth of the cancer cells and it is also helpful in slowing down their growth and spread throughout the body.

Iressa Indications

Patients who are suffering of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis should not take Iressa especially if they are currently under chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment, because it can worsen their medical condition.

Iressa Intake Guidelines

Patients should ask their doctor how to take every dose of Iressa in order to obtain visible results during the treatment. They should listen carefully to the doctor’s instructions, and under no circumstances should they deviate from them. This medicine should be administered under the supervision of a doctor which has experience in the use of cancer medicines.

Individuals should take every dose of Iressa with a glass of water, with or without food. Your personal healthcare provider will establish the quantity and frequency of the treatment, depending on what type of cancer you have. Patients should take this medicine regularly.

Your personal healthcare provider or physician will ask you to undergo regular blood tests and other medical exams in order to keep under control the evolution of the disease and the side effects which may develop.

Iressa Dosage

The personal healthcare provider will prescribe the patients the correct amount of Iressa necessary for the medical condition they are suffering from. The normal dose which is usually prescribed is 250 mg of the drug for adults. Bigger doses are no more effective than this; furthermore, they increase the grade of toxicity for the human organism.

Patients who can not swallow solid products should disperse the medicine in half of a glass of water. One should allow the product to dissolve in the water for about 10 minutes. After this, the liquid should be taken in. Individuals who are suffering from some of the most severe clinical manifestations of this medical product should be prescribed lower doses of this medication.

Iressa Overdose

The patients who suspect that they have taken an overdose of Iressa should immediately inform their personal healthcare provider, because the toxicity grade will increase. There is no specific treatment for an overdose of this medicine.

Your caregiver may ask you to remain in the hospital for a few days for further investigations and symptomatic treatment. The most common symptoms of an overdose of Iressa include the following: diarrhea, skin rash, dizziness and headaches.

Iressa Missed Dose

Patients should try as much as they can to take every dose of Iressa at their due time. In case a patient forgets to take one of the scheduled doses, he should call his personal health care provider. Depending on the medical condition the patients are suffering from, the doctor may tell them to take the dose as soon as they recall or if it is time for the next dose, to take the next one, forgetting about the missed one.

After this they can continue with their regular schedule. Patients should not take double doses of this medicine, unless their personal health care provider or doctor advises them to do so. Taking a double dose of this medicine may lead to an overdose.

Iressa Side Effects

Although almost every medicine has its side effects, some people experience one or more of its clinical manifestations, while some do not. Patients who are under treatment with Iressa may experience allergic reactions (which trigger the following symptoms: breathing difficulty, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue and face, hives), lung, liver and eye problems, vomiting, nausea which can be severe, loss of appetite and diarrhea.

Other side effects which the patients who use Iressa may experience are the following: mild to moderate nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, skin rash, itching, acne and dryness.

Iressa Drug Reactions

Patients should inform their doctor, before beginning the treatment with Iressa, if they are taking other medicines, especially if they are taking one or more of the following drugs: Warfarin, Rifampin, Dilantin, Nizoral, Sporanox, stomach acid reducers (such as Tagamet, Zantac, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec).
