Targocid is a medical product that is widely known as lyophilised teicoplanin. This medication is actually an antibiotic that is able to fight against bactericidal, glycopeptide infectious disorders that are caused by the fermentation of Actinoplanes teicomyceticus. It has been established that a therapy with this medication is effective in vitro against both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria that are included in the Gram-positive class.  

The most common bacteria that effectively respond to a therapy with this medicine (Targocid) are included in the following species: coagulase negative staphylococci, staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Listeria monocytogenes, enterococci, group JK Corynebacteria, micrococci, peptococci, Clostridium difficile and so on. The most common bacteria that are known to be resistant to a therapy with Targocid usually belong to the following species: lactobacillus, nocardia asteroides, Leuconostoc. All the bacteria that are Gram-negative are not sensible to a therapy with this antibiotic.

After being administered intramuscularly or intravenously, Targocid is widely spread in the tissues of the human organism. After this, the medicine is secreted into the plasma, where it will remain for another 80-90 hours. The excretion of this medication takes place through urine. Unfortunately, the absorption of the oral forms of this medicine is not effective enough. Targocid is unable to penetrate the barriers that stop it from reaching the patient’s brain.

Targocid Indications

A therapy with Targocid is widely prescribed to individuals who have been diagnosed with potentially severe infections with Gram-positive bacteria. Some infections that do not respond to the therapy with other anti-bacterial medicines may be eased with a treatment trial with this antibiotic. Targocid Warnings

A therapy with this medicine is not indicated in the case of individuals who present allergies to teicoplanin. It has not been determined whether a therapy with this antibiotic is suitable for children younger than 3 years old. The safety of a treatment trial with Targocid during lactation and / or pregnancy has not been clearly determined. An injection with Targocid must not be given into the patient’s subarachnoid space. Some patients who had followed a prolonged therapy with this medicine developed thrombocytopenia. Targocid Intake Guidelines

An injection with Targocid can be administered either in the patient’s muscles or in one of his or her veins. If the individual is administered this drug IV, his physician can choose either an infusion (that lasts for 30 minutes) or a simple bolus administration. Although most patients are given a dose of this medicine per day, the most severe clinical cases can be prescribed several administrations of Targocid per day on a regular basis.

Most of the patients present a benefic therapeutic response within the first 3 days from the beginning of their treatment trial with this drug (if the bacterium is sensitive to this medicine). Knowing the severity of the disorder and the cause of the infection will enable the physician to determine for how long the patient will have to follow a therapy with this medicine. Individuals who have been diagnosed with osteomyelitis and / or endocarditis might have to follow a therapy with Targocid for more than 21 days. In some cases, an optimization of the therapy can be achieved by regularly testing the concentrations of teicoplanin in the patient’s serum. Targocid Dosage

Targocid Overdose

Targocid Side Effects
