Calpol Information

Calpol (also known as Calprofen) is a Paracetamol suspension for children. This medicine is used in order to relieve the pain and lower the fever in children.

Calpol Indications

Calpol is widely prescribed by doctors to the patients who have flu/cold, different types of infections, high fever, mild to moderate pain like tooth pain, sore throat, and headaches.

Calpol Warnings

Children should be administered only the special form of this clinical remedy – Calpol, the one that has been especially designed for use in the case of youngsters. Parents should respect the dosage indications from the product’s label and should not give to their children two medications which contain Paracetamol at the same time.

Patients who are suffering from decreased liver and kidney function should discuss with their personal health care provider in order to make sure that it is all right to take this medicine. People should not take this medicine if they are allergic to one or more of its components, and should inform their personal health care provider if they have had allergic reactions to this drug or to other medicines. The patients who suspect that they present an allergic reaction to Calpol should stop their treatment immediately.

Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast feeding can use this medicine with no fear, because this drug is not harmful to the baby. This medicine is known to pass into the breast milk but it is not dangerous for the baby. However, nursing mothers should talk to their caregiver before beginning the treatment with Calpol.

Calpol Intake Guidelines

Patients should ask their personal health care provider to tell them exactly how to take this medicine in order to obtain visible results during and after their treatment. Patients should listen carefully to the doctor’s indications and under no circumstances should they deviate from them.

Patients are recommended to take each dose of Calpol with a full glass of water, with or without food; in case the patients have a sensitive stomach, it is recommendable to take this medicine with food, in order to prevent stomach pain / discomfort.

Calpol Dosage

Patients should ask their doctor to tell them how to take every dose of Calpol in order to obtain the best results. The personal health care provider will prescribe you the exact dose of this medicine, suitable for the medical condition you are suffering from. Patients are not recommended to use more or less of this medicine, nor for a longer or a shorter period of time, without discussing this problem with their caregiver, physician or pharmacist.

Calpol Overdose

Patients who suspect that they have taken an overdose of this medicine should immediately announce their doctor and the local poison control center, because an overdose of this medicine may lead to serious damage of the kidneys and liver. You physician can ask you to remain in the hospital for a few days, for further investigations and symptomatic treatment. The most common symptoms of a Calpol overdose include the following: fatigue, vomiting, sweating and nausea.

Calpol Missed Dose

Patients should try as much as possible to take every dose of Calpol at its due time. In the case in which a patient forgets taking one of the doses, he should take it as soon as he recalls. However, if it is time for the next dose, patients should take it, forgetting about the missed one and go on with their regular schedule.

Calpol Side Effects

It is well known that each medicine has its side effects, which some patients experience and some do not. Many patients experience mild side effects during the treatment with this drug. If individuals use this drug as they were prescribed, their chances of developing side effects are very low. The prolonged use of this medicine leads to liver and kidney damage or even kidney failure.

Patients who experience an allergic reaction to Calpol (such as hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue and throat and skin rash) should stop the treatment immediately and announce their personal health care provider, physician or doctor. Other side effects which patients who are under treatment with this medicine can experience, but do not require medical attention can include the following: diarrhea, upset stomach, skin reactions, headaches, and tiredness, bruising and bleeding.

Calpol Drug Reactions

Patients should ask their doctor if their children are allowed to take Calpol, while they are taking anti sickness medications such as Domperidone and Metoclopramide. Patients who are taking treatment for high cholesterol levels such as Cholestyramine should also ask their doctor if they can begin a treatment with Calpol.

Other drugs which interact with Calpol include: anti-coagulants (such as Warfarin and Aspirin), anticonvulsants (this medicines are used to treat the people who are suffering from epilepsy), sedatives, tricyclic antidepressants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like Naproxen, Aspirin and Ibuprofen), oral contraceptives and blood thinners.

Individuals are not recommended to take Calpol with alcohol or to drink alcohol during the treatment with this medicine, as this will increase the side effects of this drug. Patients should also inform their doctor if they are taking vitamin C, because the use of such supplements increases the levels of Calpol in the blood.
