Regranex Information

Regranex (also know as Becaplermin) is a biological response modifier and a platelet derived growth factor; this wound healing agent works by helping the human organism form the cells which are involved in the tissue growth and wound healing.

Regranex Indications

Regranex is usually prescribed by the personal health care provider or doctor to the persons who are suffering from skin ulcers of the lower legs and feet, even if such lesions are caused by the patient’s diabetes. For excellent results it should be used with adjacent wound care.

Regranex Warnings

Malignancy and mortality have been reported during the treatment with Regranex, in the patients who have been using more than 3 or 4 tubes of this medicine. This medicine must be used with caution in the patients who are known to have malignancies.

Individuals should inform their doctor if they had unusual or allergic reactions to parabens, metacresol and becaplermin or to other foods, substances, dyes and preservatives. At the moment it is not known whether Regranex passes into the breast milk or not, this is why breast feeding women should discuss this clinical subject with their doctor or pharmacist.

Individuals should inform their doctor, before beginning the treatment with Regranex, if they have any medical conditions, especially if they are suffering from skin cancer or tumors, wounds which show exposed bone, ligaments, tendons and joint.

Regranex Intake Guidelines

Patients should ask their personal healthcare provider to tell them exactly how to use this medicine in order to obtain visible results during and after the treatment. Patients should try as much as possible not to touch the tip of the tube to the skin ulcer or to any other surface, because it can become infected.

Patients should wash their hands very well before preparing their daily dose of this medicine. The proper quantity of medicine which should be used depends on the size of the skin ulcer. Patients should spread the medicine carefully on the skin as a thin film. They should remove the medicine which remained on the skin ulcer after 12 hours with water or with Sodium Chloride.

Patients should be careful to keep the ulcer from becoming dry, this is why when they change the dressing or the bandage they should wet it in Sodium Chloride in order to prevent injury. Individuals should ask their doctor if they have questions about how to use Regranex.

Regranex Dosage

Patients should ask their personal health care provider how to take each dose of Regranex, because the dose differs from patient to patient. Listen to the doctor’s instructions carefully and under no circumstances deviate from any of them.

In the case of patients who are suffering from skin ulcers which are caused by diabetes type II, the dose of medicine should be applied once a day on the affected skin area and left for 12 hours before changing it. In the case of children who are suffering from the same medical condition, the dose of Regranex will be established by the doctor or personal healthcare provider.

Regranex Overdose

In case a patient believes that he has taken an overdose of Regranex, he should immediately announce his personal health care provider or doctor and local poison control center. Your personal physician will ask you to remain in the hospital for a few days for further investigation and symptomatic treatment.

The most common symptoms which a patient who has taken an overdose of Regranex can experience are the same as the side effects of this medicine, only much more severe: skin rash, hives, headaches, itching and difficulty breathing.

Regranex Missed Dose

It is very important for the patients to remember taking every dose of Regranex at its due time. In case a patient forgets taking one of the doses he should employ it as soon as he recalls. If it is time for the next one, he should take the next dose, forgetting about the missed one and continuing with his normal schedule.

Patients are not recommended to take double doses of this medicine, unless their personal health care provider, doctor or pharmacist advised them to do so. A double dose of Regranex may lead to an overdose.

Regranex Side Effects

It is well known that each medicine has its side effects which some of the patients experience and some do not. When Regranex is used in small doses the chances of developing side effects are very low.

Patients should immediately announce their doctor if they experience one or more of the following side effects after using Regranex: severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives, breathing problems, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth face lips and tongue), irritation, reddened skin.

Other side effects which may appear during treatment with Regranex but do not need medical attention are the following: infection, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, erythematous rashes, and cardiovascular, muscular, respiratory, central and peripheral nervous system problems.

Regranex Drug Reactions

The chances that any other medications (taken orally or by injection) could interfere with Regranex are very small. But, as there are many drugs which can interfere with each other it is best to ask you personal healthcare provider or your physician to tell you more about drug interactions.

Patients should inform their doctor about all the medications that they are taking: prescription, over the counter drugs, minerals, herbal products, vitamins. Patients should not start a treatment with a new medication without informing their doctor.
