HAVRIX HEPATITIS A VACCINE

HAVRIX

Havrix Information

Havrix is a vaccine, which works by stimulating the organism to produce antibodies against the infection with hepatitis A. It is part of national immunization projects from all over the world.

Havrix Indications

As we said before, Havrix is a vaccine which is used in order to prevent the infection with Hepatitis A. Havrix may be used for other purposes than those listed above; for further information ask your personal caregiver.

Havrix Warnings

Patients are not recommended to use this medicine if they are allergic to any ingredient from the Havrix’s composition or if they have had an allergic reaction to another hepatitis A vaccine (which manifested through hives, itching, breathing problems, swelling of the mouth, lips and tongue, and tightness of the chest).

Individuals should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are suffering from any medical condition, especially from the following: if they are allergic to latex and dry natural rubber, if they are pregnant or preparing to become pregnant, if you are breast feeding, if you have a weakened immune system, fever, infections, if you have a bleeding medical condition, etc.

Patients should also tell their personal health care provider if they are currently taking prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplements, herbal products, anticoagulants (such as Warfarin), medicines which suppress the immune system (such as Cyclosporines), because they might not be able to begin the treatment with Havrix, or they will need a dosage adjustment.

Havrix Intake Guidelines

Patients should ask their personal health care provider or doctor to tell them exactly how to use each dose of Havrix, in order to obtain the best results during and after the treatment. In the cases in which the patients do not fully understand the doctor’s indications they should ask him to explain them again or they can ask a pharmacist. The patients, who want to know more about Havrix, should consult the medicine’s label.

This medicine must be administered intramuscularly, and not intravenously, intra-dermally or subcutaneously. In the adult patients, the vaccine should be given in the deltoid region. It is not recommended for Havrix to be administered in the gluteal region, because in such cases the vaccine will have no effect. Havrix should be well shaken before administration.

Individuals are recommended to inspect the product before using it, in order to check if Havrix is discolored or has small particles in it.

Havrix Dosage

Patients should ask their personal health care provider or doctor to tell them exactly how to use Havrix, in order to obtain visible results during and after the treatment. Patients should listen carefully to the doctor’s indications and under no circumstance should they deviate from any of them. The recommended dose for adults is of 1440 ml; a booster dose of 1440 ml is administered between 6 and 12 months; for the children and adolescents, the primary dose is of 720 ml and after this, the booster dose of 720 should be given between 6 and twelve months.

Havrix Overdose

In case a patient believes that he has taken an overdose of Havrix he should immediately announce his personal health care provider or doctor and also the local poison control center. Your personal physician will ask you to remain in the hospital for further investigations and symptomatic treatment.

The symptoms of an overdose of Havrix have not been thoroughly studied and are not yet known; this is why it is important to announce your doctor as soon as possible if you believe that you have taken an overdose of this medicine.

Havrix Missed Dose

Patients should try as much as possible to take each dose of Havrix at its due time, but in case they forget to take one of their doses they should take it as soon as they recall. When it is almost time for the next dose, they should proceed with the next dose, forgetting about the missed one and go on with their regular schedule.

Patients are not recommended to take a double dose of this medicine, unless their personal health care provider tells them to do so.

Havrix Side Effects

Any medicine has its side effects which some people experience and some do not experience. Patients should inform their doctor if they unfortunately develop one or more of these common side effects: headaches, loss of appetite, mild fever, redness, nausea, swelling, soreness, tiredness and warmth in the area of the injection.

Patients should immediately end their treatment with Havrix if they experience one or more of these severe side effects: breathing problems, tightness in the chest, rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth, face, lips and tongue, unusual hoarseness, numbness or tingling of the arms and legs, unusual bleeding or bruising, and seizures.

Most of the side effects are mild and usually disappear in 24 hours. Other side effects which the patients may experience and that do not require medical attention include the following: induration, fatigue, malaise, anorexia, hematoma, urticaria, abdominal pain, diarrhea, lymphadenopathy, arthralgia, insomnia and myalgia.

Havrix Drug Reactions

Patients should talk to their doctor before beginning the treatment with Havrix and tell him if they are currently taking one or more of the following medicines: oral/injectable steroid medication (such as Betamethasone, Cortone, Orasone, Aristocort), nasal steroid (such as Pulmicort, Flovent, Azmacort, Nasacort), cancer treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and so on.

Patients should also inform their doctor if they are under treatment with one ore more of the following medicines: Imuran, Simulect, Enbrel, Arava, Orthoclone, CellCept, Rapamune, Prograf and Neoral.

This is not a complete list with all the medicines which interact with Havrix; for further information, patients should discuss with their personal healthcare provider, doctor or pharmacist.
