GEMZAR GEMCITABINE

GEMZAR

Gemzar Information

Gemzar (also known as Gemcitabine) is a nucleoside which is used in chemotherapy. Gemzar is a cancer medicine which slows down the growth and spread of the cancer cells in the human organism.

Gemzar Indications

Gemzar is usually recommended in the clinical case of patients who are suffering from pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. This medicine may also be used to treat other medical conditions, if the doctor recommends you to do so. Talk to your personal healthcare provider for more information.

Gemzar Warnings

The intake of Gemzar suppresses the bone marrow’s function leading to leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia and myelosuppression. Myelosuppression is known to develop when the patient exceeds the normal levels of toxicity; this is why it is important for the patients to be monitored during the treatment with Gemzar.

The intake of Gemzar can also lead to pulmonary toxicity. In the severe cases, the treatment should be interrupted and the patients should receive supportive care. The use of this medicine can generate Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (also abbreviated as HUS) and even renal failure.

Hepatotoxicity, liver failure and death cases are very rare among the patients who are under treatment with Gemzar. Pregnant women are not recommended to use this medicine, as it harms the baby. The use of this medicine during pregnancy leads to serious malformations of the fetus (such as incomplete ossification and cleft palate, fused pulmonary artery and absence of the gall bladder).

Patients should inform their doctor before beginning their treatment with this drug if they are suffering from any kidney and liver diseases and if they are currently under radiation therapy, because they may not be able to take this medicine or they will need a dose adjustment.

Intake of Gemzar can lower the blood cells which help the human organism to fight against the unwanted infections; this usually leads to easy bruising and bleeding. The low levels of blood cells can also make it easier for a person to get sick; this is why it is important to avoid crowded places and sick people.

Gemzar Intake Guidelines

Patients should ask their doctor to tell them how to take Gemzar; each individual should listen carefully to his PD’s instructions. Under no circumstances should they deviate from what the doctor told them. Gemzar is administered as an intravenous injection. The patients usually receive this injection at a hospital, on a daily basis, during a week (7 days).

Your personal healthcare provider will make regular blood tests in order to keep under control their blood cell levels. He will also perform regular tests of the kidney’s and liver’s functions. In the case in which this medicine gets on a patient’s skin, he or she should quickly wash that area with plenty of soap and warm water. Patients should try not to miss any visit to their doctor.

Gemzar Dosage

In the case of the patients who are suffering from pancreatic cancer, Gemzar should be administered at a dose of 1000 mg once a week for seven weeks. The doctor can change the patient’s dose in the cases in which the hematologic toxicity degree is too high. After each dose, the patients will be examined through a complete blood count in order to detect the suppression of the bone marrow. If this medical condition is detected, then the doctor will modify the patient’s dose or will stop their treatment.

The patients who are suffering from lung cancer will receive Gemzar at a dose of 1000 mg on the days 1, 8 and 15 of every 28 day cycle. The doctor will regularly do blood tests in order to see the individual’s levels of granulocytes and platelets and he will also want to do a complete blood count in order to detect the suppression of the bone marrow.

Patients who are suffering from breast cancer will receive 1250 mg of Gemzar on the 1, 8 and 21 day of each 21 day cycle. Patients who are suffering from ovarian cancer will be administered 1000 mg on the 1, 8 and 21 day of each 21 day cycle.

Gemzar Overdose

Patients, who suspect that they have received more of this medication than their normal dose, should announce their doctor immediately. Until now, there has not been discovered the antidote for an overdose of Gemzar. The most common symptoms which a patient can develop after an overdose can include: numbness, severe rash, flu symptoms, fever, chills, tingly feeling, myelosuppression, and paresthesias.

Gemzar Missed Dose

Patient should try to respect the schedule which their doctor gave them and try not to forget to take any dose of Gemzar. However, in the cases in which patients do forget to employ a certain dose, they should announce their doctor immediately in order to establish a new treatment schedule.

Gemzar Side Effects

It is well known the fact that any medicine has its side effects. Here is a list of the most important side effects which the use of Gemzar can generate: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, a decrease in the number of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, mouth ulcers, sleepiness, low blood pressure, inflammation of the lungs, liver or kidney failure.

As the nausea and vomiting can be severe, the doctor can recommend drug therapy in order to relieve and prevent these two side effects. The doctor may also recommend changes in the individual’s diet and / or life style, in order to enhance the beneficial effects of a therapy with this medicine.

Gemzar Drug Reactions

Your doctor may know what medicines can interact with Gemzar; this is why it is important for the patients to tell their personal healthcare provider about all the prescriptions, over the counter medications, minerals, herbal products, vitamins and drugs that they have been prescribed by other doctors.
