CALAMINE

Calamine Information

Calamine is a topical medication available under the form of cream, lotion or ointment. It has a protective effect on the skin, while also acting as an antipruritic agent with positive effect on minor skin irritations.

Calamine Indications

Typically the health care professionals will prescribe Calamine for the relief of such symptoms as pain, itching and discomfort as well as weeping and oozing caused by irritations. It is commonly employed in the treatment of patients that are affected by such irritations as those caused by poison oak, poison ivy or poison sumac. Calamine may also be prescribed in other situations as well. If you have been prescribed a treatment with this medicine and would like to obtain further information it is best to consult with the prescribing health care professional.

Calamine should not be prescribed or administered to patients that are suffering from an allergy to this product or to any of its ingredients. It is recommended that before starting a therapy with this product you should inform the prescribing health care professional of any allergies you may have to medication, foods, dyes or preservatives.

Calamine should be safe for use during pregnancy and breast-feeding; however it is recommended to consult with your personal physician before staring a therapy with this product if you are pregnant or if you are a nursing mother.

This product is not expected to have side effects in children of over 2 years of age or in elder patients (older than 60 years of age). As such, this product may be used on such patients safely. For the treatment of infants and children under two years of age, you should consult your personal health care provider.

Calamine Intake Guidelines

Calamine is a medicine that should only be used externally. You should not swallow any quantity of this product, and you should avoid contact with the eyes. You should not apply this medicine on mucous membranes (such as the inside of the nose or mouth or on the anal or genital areas) unless your prescribing health care provider specifically instructed you to do so.

It is recommended to closely follow the Calamine application guidelines that have been given to you by the prescribing health care specialist. The following information is generic, and may not be suitable to your case.

If you are using Calamine cream or ointment, you should apply the product to the affected area of skin and rub gently until the product forms a thin layer over the entire affected surface. In the case of Calamine lotion, shake the container well, then apply the medicine by using a cotton pledget and allow the medicine to dry before covering the area.

Calamine Dosage

The exact Calamine dosage may vary from one situation to another depending on a number of factors that are particular to your case. You should use the Calamine dosage that has been prescribed to you by the examining health care professional, and you should apply the medicine as often as needed or as otherwise recommended by the prescribing health care professional.
