VELOSEF CEFRADINE

VELOSEF

Velosef Information

Velosef is a cephalosporine antibiotic based on Cefradine, a substance that is widely known for its effectiveness in killing susceptible bacteria. It acts by inhibiting the growth and replication of bacteria, thus allowing the immune system to kill the invasive agents.

Velosef Indications

Velosef may be prescribed for the treatment of several types of infections of the urinary tract and of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, of the skin, bones and joints or of the soft tissues. It may also be employed in the treatment of endocarditis and septicemia. The most common infections that are commonly treated with Velosef are pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, otitis media, bronchopneumonia, skin abscesses, cellulitis, impetigo, and furunculosis. Other affections that are not listed here may also be treated with Velosef; if you would like to know exactly why you have been prescribed a treatment course with this drug, you should consult with your personal health care professional.

Velosef Warnings

Velosef may not be prescribed or administered to patients that are hypersensitive to this drug or other similar cephalosporins, or to any of the ingredients of this pharmaceutical product.

It is advised that caution is employed when administering Velosef injections to patients that are suffering from renal or hepatic impairment, as well as in the case of patients suffering from (or with a medical history of) gastrointestinal disorders, as studies have shown that cephalosporins may cause colitis or other affections of the gastrointestinal tract.

In most cases, Velosef may be safely administered during pregnancy or lactation – however it is advised that you consult with your personal health care professional if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the near future or if you are a nursing mother.

Velosef Intake Guidelines

The Velosef injections are typically administered to patients that are suffering from infections with susceptible invasive agents, in situations where oral medication is not tolerated. Also, this drug may be administered through a slow intravenous infusion to patients that are affected by severe, possibly life-threatening infections. In any case, the medicine should be administered exactly as recommended by the supervising health care professional.

The Velosef treatment must be continued for the full prescribed duration, even if the symptoms may appear to recede within a few days from the start of the treatment. Ceasing the treatment too soon may cause a relapse of the symptoms, and may allow the invasive agent to develop a resistance to the medication thus making the affection much harder to treat effectively.

Velosef Dosage

The common Velosef dosage is of 500 mg per day, divided in two to four doses spaced at equal time intervals. In severe cases or when dealing with chronic infections, the medication dosage may be increased. In the case of more complex infections, larger doses (2 to 4 g per four times per day) should be employed, reaching 8 g in the case of severe infections (e.g. endocarditis or septicemia). If complications are also present, prolonged therapy may be in order.

In the case of children, the exact Velosef dosage is determined based on body weight. Typically, the daily dosage is of 50 to 100 mg per kg divided in four daily administrations; this dosage may be increased to 200-300 mg per day in the case of severe infections.

As part of surgical prophylaxis, Velosef is commonly administered as a single dose of 1 to 2 mg (either IM or IV) prior to surgery; additional doses may be administered subsequently, as necessary.

Velosef Overdose

An overdose with Velosef is a severe medical condition which may cause serious consequences, both short and long term. In some cases, an overdose with this pharmaceutical product may even pose a threat to the patient’s life. As such, it is best that you avoid taking large quantities of this medicine – you should never take a larger dose of Velosef than you have been prescribed. If at any point you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with this pharmaceutical product, it is strongly recommended to call the local poisons center for advice. In more severe situations, it is best that you go to the nearest medical facility in order to obtain prompt medical assistance.

Velosef Missed Dose

If you accidentally miss one of your Velosef doses, it is best that you take it immediately when you remember about it. However, if two or more hours have passed since the normal intake time, you are advised to completely skip the missed dose and continue your therapy with the next scheduled injection. As taking the medicine at roughly the same time each day may reduce the risk of accidentally missing any dose, we suggest that you set up a strict intake schedule that fits your daily agenda and your life style.

Velosef Side Effects

In most cases, the Velosef side effects are not severe and go away with time. They are caused by the organism adjusting to the medication, and include heartburn, glossitis, dizziness, headache, dyspnea, paresthesias, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, vaginitis or candidal overgrowth. Skin rashes, pruritus, urticaria and oedema are also commonly encountered side effects of a treatment with Velosef.

Localized reactions are possible at the injection site. In less common circumstances, more severe side effects have been reported. These include allergic reactions, jaundice and interstitial nephritis.

Velosef Drug Reactions

Velosef may interact with several other pharmaceutical products. The most commonly encountered interactions are with loop diuretics (which may increase cephalosporin toxicity) and Probenecid, which may raise the blood concentration of the medicine. Other drug reactions are also possible. For a full list of interactions, it is best that you consult a specialized health care professional.
