VALCYTE VALGANCICLOVIR HCL

VALCYTE

Valcyte Information

Valcyte is an antiviral medication based on Valgancyclovir Hydrochloride, also containing the inactive ingredients povidone, stearic acid, crospovidone and microcrystalline cellulose. It is available under the form of 450 mg tablets.

Valcyte Indications

Valcyte is commonly prescribed in order to treat cytomegalovirus infections of the eye in the case of patients who are also suffering from AIDS. Also, this medicine may be employed as a prophylactic agent for the prevention of CMV infections during and immediately after organ transplant surgery. This medicine may be prescribed for the treatment or prevention of other viral infections or medical affections that are not listed here. If you have received a prescription for Valcyte and are not sure why, it is best that you ask your prescriber for additional information.

Valcyte Warnings

You should not start taking Valcyte if you have a known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this pharmaceutical product, if you have low platelet or blood cell levels or if you are undergoing dialysis. Special care should be employed in the case of pregnant patients, as well as in the case of patients suffering from kidney or bone marrow disorders. For patients that have a medical history of radiation therapy or chemotherapy, special testing should be performed prior to beginning a Valcyte therapy course in order to determine their susceptibility to bone marrow disorders.

If you belong in any of the above categories, you should check with your health care professional regarding the risks and benefits of the Valcyte treatment.

Valcyte Intake Guidelines

Take Valcyte exactly as directed by your health care professional. If any of your prescriber’s directions are different from the following information, you should only follow his or her advice, disregarding the following.

You should take Valcyte with food and / or water in order to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablets whole – do not break, crush or chew the tablets. Take the medicine for the full duration of the therapy, even if your symptoms recede within a few days from the start of the treatment. Avoid contact with broken tablets. If you happen to get any of the medicine inside the tablet on your skin, wash the area thoroughly with clean water and soap. If any of the medicine gets in your eyes or inside the mouth or nose, wash with plenty of clean water.

During your Valcyte therapy you will be required to undergo periodic eye exams and blood testing, as well as other tests to monitor the evolution of your condition and to detect any signs of side effects that may appear. You should ensure that you do not miss any of the scheduled follow-up appointments with your doctor.

Valcyte Dosage

Your prescriber will provide you with the Valcyte dosage that you will need to employ for the duration of your therapy. As the dosage is determined by taking into account various factors that are specific to your situation, it is likely that your prescribed Valcyte dosage will differ from that of other patients’. As such, you should never employ the medication dosage that has been prescribed to someone else as the treatment may not yield the desired effects.

Based on your organism’s response to the Valcyte therapy and on the progress of your disease, your personal health care professional may decide to change the medication dosage during the course of your treatment. It is advised that you only take the medicine dosage that has been prescribed to you last.

Valcyte Overdose

It is strongly recommended that you do not exceed the prescribed Valcyte dosage, in order to avoid becoming affected by an overdose with this pharmaceutical product. An overdose may cause severe short or long term consequences on your health state, and in severe cases it may even prove lethal. As such, it is best that you contact the nearest emergency room immediately if you suspect an overdose with this medicine. Among the common symptoms of an overdose with this drug, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased urination and jaundice have been reported.

Valcyte Missed Dose

You should set up a strict Valcyte intake schedule, as this may help reduce the chances of accidentally missing any intakes of the medicine. However, if you do happen to miss a dose, it is recommended that you take it as soon as you remember – provided that no longer than two hours have passed since the regular intake time. If more than two hours have passed, skip taking that dose entirely and continue with your normal treatment schedule. Do not take a larger dose than usual in an attempt to make up for the missed dose.

Valcyte Side Effects

Valcyte may cause a number of severe adverse reactions; these are manifested through such signs and symptoms as chills, coughing, confusion, depression, decrease in the volume of urine, hallucinations, fever, coordination loss, numbness or tingling sensations in the extremities, sore throat, seizures, tremor, swelling of the feet or legs, movement disorders, unusual bleeding or bruising, weakness or tiredness, changes in vision. Any of these, as well as any symptoms of an allergic reaction, should be immediately brought to the attention of a qualified health care professional.

Less severe side effects are more common; however, these too may become persistent or bothersome. It is best that you inform your personal physician of any unwanted signs or symptoms that you may experience at any point during your Valcyte therapy.

Valcyte Drug Reactions

Valcyte may interact with several drugs and medicines, including Probenecid, Didanoside, Zidovudine or Mycophenolate Mofetil. It is best that you inform your prescriber of any other drugs you are taking before starting to take Valcyte, and do not start any new medication therapy without consulting with him or her regarding the possible interactions.
