MAXAQUIN LOMEFLOXACIN

MAXAQUIN

Maxaquin Information

Maxaquin is an antibiotic medication, part of the Fluoroquinolones class of drugs. It is based on the main ingredient Lomefloxacin, and it has a strong antibacterial action, which is why it is typically employed in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Maxaquin Indications

Maxaquin treatment is usually prescribed in the case of patients suffering from low respiratory infections such as chronic bronchitis or in the case of individuals affected by urinary tract infections (for example cystitis). In some cases, this drug may also be administered as a prophylactic measure prior to prostate biopsy or bladder surgery in order to prevent post-operatory bacterial infections.

Maxaquin may also be prescribed for other situations that are not listed here. In order to find out exactly why you have been prescribed a treatment with this drug, it is advised to consult your personal health care professional.

Maxaquin Warnings

Maxaquin causes an increase in the patients’ photosensitivity. As such, patients exposed to sunlight (direct or indirect) as well as sunlamps may develop sunburns despite of their proper use of sunscreen or sun-block remedies. It is recommended that direct or indirect exposure to natural or artificial sunlight should be avoided during and for a few days after the treatment.

Maxaquin may not be used or may require special dosing in the case of patients suffering from seizures, epilepsy or kidney disease. Also, this medication should not be employed in the treatment of patients younger than 12 years of age. At this time, it is not known whether this medication has any effect on unborn babies; it is recommended that you consult with your personal health care provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Nursing mothers should also consult with their personal physician before starting a treatment with Maxaquin, as it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk.

Maxaquin Intake Guidelines

It is strongly recommended that you closely follow the intake guidelines that your prescribing health care provided has given you. Maxaquin should be taken with a glass of water, and over the course of the treatment it is recommended to consume extra fluids every day in order to prevent the formation of Lomefloxacin crystals in the urine. This drug may be taken with food in order to reduce stomach upset.

This medication is typically taken once per day. It is recommended that the Maxaquin dose is taken in the evening, as this may reduce the patient’s risk of developing sensitivity to natural and artificial sunlight.

Maxaquin Dosage

The exact Maxaquin dosage will be determined by the prescribing health care provider, and it may vary greatly depending on the infection being treated, the patient’s medical history and general health condition and his or her age. The dosage will also change if the drug is used as a prophylactic agent. It is highly recommended that you use the dosage that has been prescribed to you by your health care provider. Never attempt to change the prescribed Maxaquin dosage by altering the intake schedule or by taking a different dose of the medication as this may result in severe consequences.

Maxaquin Overdose

It is strongly advised that you never take a larger dose than you were prescribed by your examining health care professional. Doing so may result in severe, possibly lethal consequences. Patients suffering from an overdose with Maxaquin commonly experience seizures.

Maxaquin Missed Dose

It is recommended to keep a regular medication schedule in order to reduce the risk of missing any Maxaquin doses. If you happen to miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember if less than 2 hours have passed from the regular intake hour. If more than 2 hours have passed, you should skip that dose entirely and seek the advice of your personal health care provider. You should never take a higher dose of the medication in order to make up for a missed dose, and you should never take a Maxaquin dose if more than two hours have passed since the normal intake time unless otherwise directed by the examining health care professional.

Maxaquin Side Effects

There are several severe side effects associated with Maxaquin. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction (such as swelling of the tongue, lips or face, hives, breathing problems), seizures, hallucinations, confusion, joint or muscle pain, jaundice, severe fatigue, abnormal bruising or bleeding, nausea or abdominal pain, you should immediately stop taking Maxaquin and contact your personal health care provider.

More commonly, less severe side effects associated with this drug may appear. These do not require discontinuation of the treatment, but you should also consult with your personal health care provider if you experience vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, drowsiness or dizziness, increased photosensitivity of the skin or ringing in the ears.

Maxaquin may also cause other side effects that are not listed here. You should consult your personal physician if you experience any unexpected signs and symptoms.

Maxaquin Drug Reactions

Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium should not be taken within 2 hours from the Maxaquin intake. Similarly, Sucralfate or mineral supplements or vitamins containing zinc or iron should not be taken within 2 hours from a dose of this medication. These may cause a great decrease in the efficiency of this medication.

This drug may interact with a number of other drugs. It is recommended that you inform the prescribing health care professional before starting a therapy with this medicine if you are already taking Cimetidine, Cyclosporine, probenecid, Insulin (or other diabetes related medication, for example Glyburide or Glipizide) or NSAIDs such as Naproxen, Ibuprofen or Ketoprofen.
