GALVUS

Galvus Information

Galvus is a pharmaceutical product based on Vildagliptin – a DPP-4 inhibitor. This substance increases the quantities of two incretin hormones in the organism (GLP-1 and GIP) which are normally produced as a result of food intake. These hormones act by helping control the blood levels of glucose (sugar) mainly by stimulating the Insulin production in the pancreas.

Galvus Indications

Galvus is a medicine that is used widely in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes, also known as type 2 diabetes. It may also be employed in conjunction with other drugs for the treatment of other medical affections as well. If you are not suffering from type 2 diabetes and have been prescribed a therapy course with Galvus or if you would like to learn more about the possible uses of this medicine it is recommended to consult with a pharmacist or to ask your prescriber for further explanations.

Galvus Warnings

Galvus should not be used for the treatment of people suffering from type 1 diabetes, from diabetic ketoacidosis, severe heart failure or for patients with hepatic impairment. This drug may not be appropriate for patients who are suffering from kidney dysfunction or who receive dialysis. Patients with a hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this pharmaceutical product may not start a therapy course with this medicine. Galvus is not appropriate for use during pregnancy or breast feeding – if you are pregnant or nursing an infant you should check with your personal physician regarding alternate means of treatment. This drug may not be administered to individuals of or younger than 18 years of age.

Caution should be employed if the patient undergoing Galvus therapy is of or older than 75 years of age, if the patient is also following an ACE inhibitor therapy or if he or she is suffering from mild heart failure.

Galvus Intake Guidelines

If you have been prescribed a treatment course with Galvus, you should take the medicine exactly as you have been advised by the prescribing health care professional. If you experience gastric disturbances following a Galvus intake, you should check with your therapist to see if you may take the tablets with food or water. The tablets should be swallowed whole – you may not break them, crush them or chew them. Once you start your therapy course with this medicine you may not stop taking the tablets without your physician’s consent. Only the prescriber may decide the duration of your treatment course. If you believe you should not take this medicine any more, you should consult with your personal health care provider.

Galvus Dosage

The exact Galvus dosage may vary from one case to another. The prescriber will take into account several factors when deciding the optimal dosage, and may change the dosage during the course of the therapy. You are advised to only take the Galvus dosage that has last been prescribed to you; you should not employ the medicine dosage that has been recommended for another patient or even a dosage that has been prescribed to you in the past, as this may alter the effects of the therapy.

Galvus Overdose

Taking large quantities of a pharmaceutical product may cause a number of severe side effects, and the consequences of overdosing may trigger both short and long term health problems. As such, you should never exceed the Galvus dosage that you have been prescribed, to avoid becoming affected by an overdose with this drug. If you accidentally ingest a larger quantity of this medicine, it is best that you immediately contact a specialized health care professional, who will provide you with advice on how to correct the situation. Severe cases of Galvus overdose require immediate hospitalization of the patient and emergency medical assistance in order to prevent further damage to his or her health and to attempt to reverse any adverse effects that may have appeared already.

Galvus Missed Dose

If you happen to accidentally miss one of your Galvus intakes, you should take it as soon as you remember about it if less than 2 hours have passed since the normal intake time. If it has been more than two hours, completely skip taking the missed dose and continue with your regular medication schedule, ensuring that you do not miss any more doses. If you have missed two or more doses of the medicine you should consult with your supervising health care specialist in order to determine the appropriate course of action.

In order to minimize the chances of missing any Galvus intakes, you should set up a strict intake schedule so that you take the medicine at around the same time every day. Your personal physician may assist you in setting up an appropriate schedule that also suits your daily agenda and your life style.

Galvus Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Galvus therapy include headache, tremor, dizziness, nausea, hypoglycemia, weakness, fluid retention causing swelling of the lower extremities (feet or ankles) or weight gain. In most cases, the adverse reactions are transitory and disappear after a few days. However, if you experience any unexpected side effects and they become persistent or particularly bothersome, you should immediately contact your personal therapist as these may be signs of possibly severe complications.

Galvus Drug Reactions

Galvus may interact with a number of other medicines, causing unwanted reactions. Most commonly, this pharmaceutical product interacts with medication that increases the patient’s blood sugar levels: bronchodilators, corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics or the drug levothyroxine. Other accidental interactions are also possible so it is best that, before starting your Galvus treatment course, you consult with your prescriber and inform him or her about any other medication you are currently taking.
