Isentress Information

Isentress is used for treating HIV, which will eventually turn into AIDS; this medication will keep the HIV cells from multiplying in the patient’s body. The medication is given to people who have a strain of the virus and other antiviral medications are not working. This medication is not going to cure HIV or AIDS. Isentress may also be used for other medical conditions.

Isentress Indications

Isentress is indicated with a combination of other anti-retroviral medications in treating HIV-1 in adults.

Isentress Warnings

History of depression
Kidney disease
Liver disease
Muscle disorder

Isentress can be taken while pregnant; it’s not known if Isentress could harm the unborn baby. Do not breast feed your baby, even if the baby was born without HIV you could pass HIV through breast milk.

Isentress Intake Guidelines

Take the medication as directed by your doctor. Do not double the dose. This medication can be taken with food or without food. Never let your prescription run out and refill as needed. It is to your best interest to take Isentress on a daily basis. Take all your HIV medications as directed and do not stop this or any medication without talking to your doctor first.

Isentress Dosage

The usual dosage is 400 mg taken orally twice a day with food or without food; if taken with rifampin the dosage is 800 mg twice a day.

Isentress Overdose

Overdosing on this medication is very unlikely; if you think you may have overdosed seek emergency medical attention.

Isentress Missed Dose

If you happen to forget to take a dose of Isentress and it is time for your next dose do not double up your medication and only take one dose at a time.

Isentress Side Effects

There are many side effects some are more serious than others. If you have any allergic reactions to this medication seek emergency treatment right away. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, swelling of the throat, lip and or tongue and trouble breathing. Serious side effects include:

Depression
Muscle pain, fever, flu-like symptoms
Itching, dark urine, confusion, increased thirst
Chills and or fever
Pale skin, easy bruising

Some of the less serious side effects include the following:

Stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea
Headache
Feeling tired
Dizziness

Isentress Drug Reactions

A few of the drugs that you should not take while taking Isentress are: cholesterol medicine such as fluvastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin and others. Phenobarbital and rifampin are two other medications. Advise your doctor before taking any over the counter medications and the doctor or pharmacist will be able to inform you of what other medication you should not take while taking Isentress.
