GENOPTIC (Gentamicin ophthalmic)

Genoptic Information

Genoptic is a drug commonly known as Gentamicin. Genoptic is used in the treatment of several eye disorders.

Genoptic Indications

Genoptic is normally used in the treatment of eye-infections that are caused by bacteria.
However, Genoptic may have other uses besides those listed here.

Genoptic Warnings

Genoptic is not recommended if the infection that has affected your eye is caused by:

• Virus
• Fungi

Genoptic is meant only for eye infections generated by bacteria.
It is not known for sure whether Genoptic may harm an unborn baby. If the patient is pregnant or planning a pregnancy it is best that she consults with a doctor before engaging in a Genoptic treatment.
It is not known if Genoptic can pass into the breast milk. Although it might be safe to breast-feed your child while you are taking the drug it is best to consult a physician regarding this issue.

Genoptic Intake Guidelines

The patient should wash his or her hands before using the drug (it consists of eye-drops). 
The tube’s or the dropper’s openings are sterile. The patient should make sure they stay that way because, if they become contaminated, they might cause a serious infection. Therefore the opening must not be touched to any surface (eyes, hands, etc).
If the eye-drops are discolored or have particles in it, it is best not to use them.
To apply the eye-drops:
You must make sure that the solution is well mixed (it is recommended to gently shake the bottle). After you have tilted your head back you must gently pull down your lower eye-lid. It is advisable that the dropper should be positioned above the eye. Look up, but not to the dropper. Squeeze from the recipient the number of drops that the doctor has prescribed you and then close your eye. You should gently press the inside corner of the eye for 1 minute. This does not allow the drug to drain into your tear duct. If you are in need of Genoptic drugs in both your eyes, you can repeat the procedure for the other eye. 
To apply the Genoptic ointment:
In order to ensure that the ointment comes easily out of the tube it is best to warm it up a little (for example, by holding it in your hands). After you have tilted your head back you must gently pull down your lower eye-lid and then apply a very thin film of the drug onto it. For the next 2 or 3 minutes you must close you eye and roll your eye-ball in various directions. If you have another medicine to apply on the eye, you should wait at least 10 minutes before doing so.
You should not stop your treatment without first consulting with your doctor although your symptoms have alleviated. Even if you feel better, this doesn’t mean that you are completely healed of the infection.

Genoptic Dosage

You should ask a doctor how to use Genoptic and you should follow each and every one of his instructions. If you have any further questions regarding the treatment, you should ask your doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse.

Genoptic Overdose

If you suspect an overdose of Genoptic you are in need of immediate medical attention.
Although these overdoses are not common, you should immediately call “poison control” or contact a doctor.
If you happen to ingest Genoptic ointment you should drink a lot of water and call your local “poison control” center.

Genoptic Missed Dose

If you miss a Genoptic dose, you should apply it as soon as possible. If it is already time for your next dose, it is best that you skip the one that you have missed. You should not take a double Genoptic dose.

Genoptic Side Effects

If you suffer from any of the symptoms below you should immediately inform your doctor:  

• Stinging
• Burning
• Itching
• Redness
• Irritation
• Blurred vision
• Abnormal sensitivity to light

If you suspect any other change that might be connected to your Genoptic treatment (even if it is not listed here) you should inform your Physician immediately.

Genoptic Drug Reactions

You should not combine Genoptic with other eye medications unless they were prescribed by your doctor.
