Isoniazid Information

Isoniazid is a popular medicine that belongs to a wide class of drugs that are also known as antibiotics. Isoniazid Warnings

Before you start taking this drug, you should alert your personal physician if you have

  • ever suffered from allergic reaction to this medicine or to any of its ingredients,
  • kidney disorders
  • liver disease.

If you do have any of these medical conditions, you may not be allowed to start taking this medicine, or you may have to take in a lower dose of Isoniazid. It has not been clearly determined whether a treatment with this medicine could harm a growing fetus (if the drug is taken during pregnancy). However, if you are planning to be pregnant or if you already are pregnant, you should ask your personal physician if you may start a treatment with this medicine. It has not been established whether this medicine’s main ingredients are able to pass into breastmilk or not. However, you should ask your personal physician if it is safe to start a treatment with this medicine if you are nursing an infant. During your treatment with Isoniazid, you should avoid drinking alcoholic beverages, because alcohol is known to increase the risk of developing a severe liver disorder during your treatment with this medicine. Some foods are known to interact with this drug, causing various symptoms (reactions) such as: severe headaches, neck stiffness, large pupils, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sweating, flushing, itching, chest pain and irregular heartbeats. If you start to experience any of these symptoms you should alert your personal physician as soon as you can. In order to avoid experiencing them, you should employ caution while eating the following foods:

  • cheeses, this includes American, Brick, Blue, Boursault, Brie, Cheddar, Camembert, Mozzarella, Emmenthaler, Gruyere, Parmesan, Romano, Stilton,  Roquefort, and Swiss;
  • yogurt and sour cream;
  • beef or chicken liver, bologna, fish, pepperoni, meats that are prepared with tenderizer, game meat, salami, summer sausage, caviar, meat extracts, shrimp paste, dried fish, herring, and tuna;
  • avocados, figs, bananas, raisins, and sauerkraut;
  • miso soup, soy sauce, fava beans, bean curd;
  • yeast extracts;
  • chocolate;
  • ginseng;
  • caffeine (coffee, cola, tea, etc.);
  • beer, red wine, vermouth, sherry, and any other distilled spirits.

Isoniazid Intake Guidelines

You should not stop your treatment with this medicine without your physician’s consent even if you start to feel better after a few days, because your infection’s symptoms may start to improve even if the infection has not completely healed. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages during your treatment with Isoniazid.
Alert your personal physician at once if you start experiencing tingling or numbness in the feet or hands, loss of appetite, weakness, fatigue, vomiting and nausea, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or darker urine.

Ask your physician how you should take this medicine. Follow each and every one of his or her instructions. It is not recommended that you deviate from any of them. If you fail to understand some of your doctor’s instructions, you should ask a nurse, a pharmacist or a doctor for further explanations. You should read the instructions from the drug’s label with care and attention. Each dose of Isoniazid is normally accompanied by a full glass of water. You should take this medicine on an empty stomach (2 hours after or 1 hour before a meal). Your personal physician should advise you to take the B6 vitamin during your treatment with Isoniazid, in order to prevent unwanted tingling or numbness, symptoms that might be caused by low levels of B6 in your blood. This medicine should be stored away from heat and moisture, in a place that is far from the reach of children and pets.

Isoniazid Dosage

Isoniazid Overdose

The average symptoms of an overdose with this medicine are known to include vomiting, nausea, blurred vision, slurred speech, hallucinations, coma, seizures and other severe symptoms that may lead to the death of the patient.
