LANOXIN (Lanoxin)

Lanoxin Information

Lanoxin is a drug with the active ingredient known as Lanoxin. Lanoxin helps the heart to beat more strongly and regularly.

Lanoxin Indications

Lanoxin is indicated for the treatment of conditions such as congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, which are types of fast heartbeats.

Lanoxin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Lanoxin Warnings

Before taking Lanoxin, tell your doctor if you experience any of the following:

• Kidney disease
• Thyroid disease

You may not be able to take Lanoxin, or you may require an adjustment of your dose or have a special monitoring device. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Lanoxin is listed under the FDA category C. Lanoxin is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant, do not take Lanoxin without first talking to your doctor. Do not take Lanoxin unless otherwise considered essential by your doctor. Lanoxin passes into breast milk. If you are breast-feeding an infant, do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor.

Lanoxin should be administered to patients with age over 65 years of age with caution. You are likely to experience side effects. You may need special dosage adjustment or special monitoring.

Lanoxin Intake Guidelines

Do not stop taking Lanoxin suddenly if you feel better. Doing such may cause your condition to worsen. You may need to take Lanoxin to help the heart work properly. Make sure you have Lanoxin available on vacations and holidays.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Try to take each dose at the same time every day.

Handle this medicine with care.

Lanoxin Dosage

Take Lanoxin exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand any of these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Lanoxin Overdose

Seek urgent medical assistance if symptoms of a Lanoxin overdose occur. Symptoms of Lanoxin overdose include the following:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Decreased appetite
• Diarrhea
• Confusion
• Seizures
• Hallucinations
• Light "halos" around objects
• Green or yellow vision
• Fatigue
• Irregular heartbeats
• Abnormally fast or slow heartbeats

Lanoxin Missed Dose

You may take the missed dose of Lanoxin up to 12 hours late. However, if more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose of Lanoxin and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. A double dose of Lanoxin must not be taken.

Lanoxin Side Effects

Lanoxin and other medicines may affect individual people in a different manner. The following are the side effects known or associated with Lanoxin, though not all patients taking Lanoxin experience the same symptoms or any side effect.

Stop taking Lanoxin and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if the following serious side effects of Lanoxin occur including the following:

• Difficulty in breathing
• Swelling of the lips
• Swelling of the tongue
• Swelling of the face
• Hives
• Closing of the throat
• Severe headache
• Fainting
• Dizziness
• Extreme Drowsiness
• Irregular heartbeats
• Slow heartbeats
• Abnormally fast heartbeats
• Vision changes
• Hallucinations
• Abnormal or psychotic behavior

Continue taking Lanoxin and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following less serious side effects of Lanoxin:

• Decreased appetite
• Diarrhea
• Unusual tiredness or weakness
• Depression
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Decreased sex drive
• Enlarged breasts in males

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially disturbing.

Lanoxin Drug Reactions

Other medicines taken together with Lanoxin may affect the rate of treatment. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

• Quinidine
• Amiodarone
• Propafenone
• antacid or laxative that contains aluminum, magnesium
• kaolin-pectin
• Atenolol
• propranolol
• acebutolol
• metoprolol
• carteolol
• labetalol
• nadolol
• diltiazem
• amlodipine
• nifedipine
• Verapamil
• cancer chemotherapy drug
• hydrochlorothiazide
• chlorothiazide
• chlorthalidone
• furosemide
• torsemide
• bumetanide
• ethacrynic acid
• triamterene
• amiloride
• Spironolactone
• eplerenone
• prednisone
• methylprednisolone
• prednisolone
• dexamethasone
• thyroid medication
• alprazolam
• amphotericin B
• cholestyramine
• colestipol
• erythromycin
• clarithromycin
• Indomethacin
• itraconazole
• metoclopramide
• rifampin
• Sulfasalazine
• tetracycline
