Madopar Information

Madopar (Prolopa), belongs to the class of drugs known as antiparkinsonian agents. Madopar’s two active ingredients are known as levodopa and benserazide. Madopar helps in replacing the substance in the brain that is lost when one has Parkinson’s disease.

Madopar Indications

Madopar (Prolopa) is primarily used in treating Parkinson's disease and in working on the central nervous system. Madopar may also be used for purposes such as those not indicated here in this guide.

Madopar Warnings

Madopar should also not be used if any of the following has occurred:

• the seal around the cap has been broken
• the bottle or packaging has shown signs of tampering
• the expiry date on the bottle has passed

Madopar should not be taken if you have already taken monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) inhibitors such as any of the following drugs within the last fourteen days:

• Phenelzine or Nardil
• Tranylcypromine or Parnate

Madopar may not be well-suited if you have the following conditions:

• untreated heart, liver, kidney or endocrine disease
• have narrow angle glaucoma
• severe mental problems

Madopar should also not be taken if you are less than twenty-five years of age.

It is not known if Madopar can cause any defects or harm to an unborn infant. However, do not take Madopar without your doctor’s permission when you are pregnant.

It is not known whether Madopar passes into breast milk and to a nursing infant. Do not take Madopar if you are nursing a child without your doctor’s consent.

Madopar Intake Guidelines

Madopar should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. If there are matters that you do not understand, ask your pharmacist, nurse or physician to explain those matters to you.

Madopar should be taken in with 8 ounces or one full glass of water or other non-alcoholic beverage. It should be taken at least thirty minutes after each meal.

Make sure to follow all of your doctor’s instructions while using Madopar (Prolopa) so as not cause unwanted adverse effects.

Madopar Dosage

Dosage of Madopar should be obtained from your doctor. Dosage may vary from person to person with regards to a variety of factors such as age, severity of condition and others. Do not take in more or less of Madopar so as not to alter its effects and to prevent overdose.

Madopar Overdose

If overdose of Madopar (Prolopa) is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or call poison control. Inform your doctor afterwards.

Madopar Missed Dose

Doses of Madopar should not be missed. If a dose is missed, however, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take the subsequent doses according to schedule. Do not take a double dose of Madopar unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

Madopar Side Effects

Madopar may have any of the following side effects or allergic reactions:

• abnormal involuntary jerking movements of the body
• mental changes including agitation, anxiety, insomnia, hallucinations and delusions
• depression
• dizziness on standing up
• your urine may be a red color
• nausea and vomiting
• loss of appetite
• diarrhea
• loss of taste
• confusion
• tiredness
• skin rash or itching
• palpitations

If you experience any of these side effects, continue using the product but inform your doctor immediately.

Other side effects may also occur when you take Madopar. Inform your doctor if you experience anything unusual while or after taking Madopar.

Madopar Drug Reactions

Madopar (Prolopa) may react with the following drugs:

• those containing iron such as Fergon, Ferrogradumet
• metoclopramide
• sympathomimetics
• blood pressure lowering medications containing reserpine
• some medications used to treat mental disorders
• general anesthetics
• other antiparkinsonian agents
• opioids such as morphine, pethidine, methadone and codeine
• antacids
