Desogen Information

Desogen is a drug that contains a hormone combination which helps prevent ovulation. The drug contains a special form of estrogen and progesterone (female hormones that are involved in conception).
Desogen also induces other effects that prevent unwanted pregnancies. This drug causes the thickening of the cervical mucous, making it difficult for a sperm to get to the uterus. This prevents the sperm’s attachment to the uterus.

Desogen Indications

Although Desogen is usually used to prevent unwanted pregnancies, it can be prescribed by a doctor for other purposes that have not been mentioned here.

Desogen Warnings

Before you start taking this drug inform your doctor if you are suffering from angina, high blood pressure or heart disease; if you have had a stroke; if you have a blood-clotting or a bleeding disorder; cancer; liver disorder or of jaundice (caused by treatments with birth control pills); vaginal bleeding; asthma, migraines or epilepsy.
Desogen is a Category X FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore it causes harm to the fetus because any hormonal changes in the mother’s body have harmful effects on the unborn baby. Stop taking Desogen if you are pregnant. Desogen’s hormones can pass into breastmilk. Do not take Desogen if you are nursing an infant without first consulting with your doctor.
During your treatment with Desogen you should avoid smoking, as smoking is known to increase the risks of a heart attack, blood clot formation, or stroke. Desogen cannot protect you from sexually transmitted disorders (such as HIV).

Desogen Intake Guidelines

Please take this medicine exactly as you doctor told you to. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse.
Usually, the first dose of Desogen is taken on the first Sunday of a new period. The normal dosage is one pill every day. You can take the pill after one of your meals (this way you will not forget to take it). Ask for your doctor’s advice if you are planning to use another birth control form during your treatment with Desogen. Store the drug away from heat and moisture.

Desogen Dosage

Ask your doctor to calculate the dose of Desogen that suits you best. The correct dosage varies from one person to another, as it depends on a couple of factors.

Desogen Overdose

An overdose with this drug should not induce serious harm. The symptoms of Desogen overdose are nausea, menstrual bleeding, vomiting. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed here, you are in need of medical attention (inform your doctor immediately).

Desogen Missed dose

Missing a pill of Desogen increases a pregnancy risk. Ask your doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse for further instructions. If you miss a pill, take it as soon as you remember, or take 2 pills on your next scheduled dose time. This should avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

Desogen Side effects

Desogen can lead to some severe side effects such as: allergic reactions (difficulty in breathing; throat closing, hives, swelling of the tongue, lips or face); a blood clot formed in one lung (chest pain breath shortness); swelling, pain, redness, swelling on your arms or legs; high blood pressure (flushing, severe headache, blurred vision); liver disorders (yellowing of the eyes or skin, abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, abnormal bruising or bleeding, fatigue).
If you are experiencing these side effects stop your treatment and inform your physician.
Desogen can also induce other side effects (more common and less serious) such as: headaches; dizziness; vomiting, nausea or diarrhea; bleeding; and sometimes breast tenderness.
These mild side effects shouldn’t stop you from continuing with your treatment. However, you should inform your doctor at once.
Other side effects may also occur when you take Desogen. Inform your physician immediately if you experience anything unusual while taking this drug.

Desogen Drug Reactions

Desogen is known to interact with some of the drugs available on the market. Some of these drugs may interfere with Desogen’s action, therefore lead to an unwanted pregnancy. You should try an alternative birth control method (or use a second one) if you are following a treatment with any penicillin antibiotic like amoxicillin (Polymox, Amoxil, Trimox, Utimox, Wymox, Augmentin, A-Cillin, Larotid, etc), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen, Amplin, Penamp, Polycillin, Totacillin, Amcill, etc), carbenicillin (Geocillin), bacampicillin (Spectrobid), cloxacillin (Tegopen, Cloxapen), dicloxacillin (Dycill, Dynapen, Pathocil), nafcillin (Unipen, Nafcil, Nallpen), oxacillin (Prostphlin, Bactocill), or penicillin (Bicilin, Veetids, Permapen, Pen Vee K, etc); any tetracycline antibiotic for example demeclocycline (Declomycin), doxycycline (Doxy, Doryx, Vibra-Tabs, Vibramycin, etc), or tetracycline (Sumycin, Achromycin, Teracyn, Panmycin, Robitet, etc); minocycline (Minocin), a barbiturate like butabarbital (Butisol), amobarbital (Amytal), carbamazepine (Tegretol); secobarbital (Seconal), mephobarbital (Mebaral), or phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal); phenytoin (Dilantin); rifampin (Rifadin); or griseofulvin (Grisactin, Fulvicin PG, Grifulvin V). There are other drugs that have not been listed here that can interact with Desogen.
