Reglan Information

Reglan is a popular medicine that is also commonly known under the generic name of Metoclopramide. This product can effectively increase the patient’s rate at which the intestines and the stomach move during digestion. This product can be used in the treatment of diabetic gastric stasis, a disorder which is known to cause unpleasant symptoms like vomiting, nausea, decreased appetite, heartburn, and prolonged fullness after a meal. It can also be prescribed in the treatment of heartburn or reflux or heartburn.

You should alert your personal doctor at once if you develop muscle spasms or uncontrollable movements of your legs, arms, face, lips, tongue, jaw, or any other body parts during your treatment with Reglan. If you start to experience agitation, unexplained anxiety, jitteriness, insomnia or breath shortness during your intake of this medicine you should inform your physician as soon as possible, because you probably require immediate medical attention.

During your treatment with Reglan you should avoid performing any activity that requires either physical or mental alertness and awakeness (such as driving). A treatment with this medicine could also trigger drowsiness. While you are using this drug you should avoid consuming any products that are known to contain alcohol. 

Do not start taking Reglan if you are suffering from:

• injury, bleeding, or stomach obstruction;
• Pheochromocytoma;
• seizure disorders such as epilepsy.
• kidney disease;
• Parkinson's disease;
• depression;
• high blood pressure;
• diabetes.

If you do have any of the disorders that have been listed above, you might not be allowed to use this medicine or you should be prescribed a lower dose of Reglan. You should also undergo several medical tests during your treatment with this medicine.

Reglan is a Category B FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this drug during pregnancy is not supposed to cause any birth defects. However, if you are pregnant, you should ask your doctor if you may start using Reglan. It has been established that this medicine’s components can pass into the patient’s milk flow. Ask your doctor if it is safe to use this drug if you are nursing a child.

Reglan Intake Guidelines

Ask your personal health care provider to give you exact directions regarding how to use this medicine. Do not disobey any of your physician’s instructions. Each dose of this drug should be accompanied by a full glass of liquid.

If you are using the liquid form of Reglan, you should use a measuring device to make sure that you take the proper dose of this medicine. Store this product away from heat and moisture, in a place that cannot be easily reached by pets or children.

If you suspect that you might be suffering from an overdose with Reglan you should seek medical care at once. Alert your personal physician and your local poison control centre as soon as possible. An overdose with this product could trigger irritability; confusion; drowsiness; tremor; uncontrollable movements of the legs, face, arms, or tongue; neck muscle spasms; and agitation.

Reglan Missed Dose

If you happen to miss taking one of your doses of Reglan, ask your personal physician for further instructions. Do not use double doses of this medicine without your doctor’s approval.

Reglan Side Effects

Stop taking Reglan and alert your personal physician at once if you develop any of these dangerous and severe side effects:

• allergic reaction to this drug’s components (breathing difficulties; throat closure; swelling of your tongue, lips, or face; hives);
• spasms of the lips, jaw, arms, legs, face, tongue, or any other body part;
• agitation, anxiety, difficulty breathing, jitteriness, or insomnia;
• yellowing of the eyes or skin;
• depression;
• vision problems;
• irregular pulse;
• hallucinations or seizures.

You may continue using Reglan but you should alert your physician at once if you develop any of these less severe but more common side effects of Reglan:

• diarrhea or nausea;
• drowsiness, dizziness, or headache;
• fluid retention;
• confusion;
• breast swelling or tenderness;
• increased urination.

Reglan Drug Reactions

During your treatment with Reglan you should avoid taking isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate). This medicine can also harmfully interact with these drugs:

• digoxin (Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin);
• cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune);
• levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa, Sinemet);
• tetracycline (Sumycin);
• insulin;
• narcotic pain relievers.
