ASMAFEN (Ketotifen)

Asmafen Information

Asmafen is a non-bronchodilator anti-asthmatic drug with marked anti-anaphylactic properties and a specific antihistaminic effect. It exerts a powerful and sustained H1 receptor blocking activity which can be clearly dissociated from its anti-anaphylactic properties. It is intended for long term prevention of Bronchial asthma, allergic bronchitis, and asthmatic symptoms associated with hay fever. It is also used for prevention and treatment of Multisystem allergies, Allergic rhinitis and allergic skin reactions.

Asmafen Warnings

Anti-asthmatic drugs already in use should never be withdrawn abruptly when long term treatment with Asmafen is begun. This applies especially to systemic corticosteroids because of the possible existence of adrenocortical insufficiency in steroid-dependent patients; in such cases recovery of a normal pituitary-adrenal response to stress may take up to one year. During the first few days of treatment with ketotifen the patient's reactions may be impaired. Care should therefore be exercised when driving a vehicle, operating machinery, etc. Although there is no evidence of any teratogenic effect ASMAFEN, like all drugs, should be given to pregnant and nursing women only under compelling circumstances. ASMAFEN should be kept out of reach of children. ASMAFEN may potentiate the effects of CNS depressants, antihistamines and alcohol.

Asmafen Side Effects

At the beginning of treatment, sedation and, rarely, dry mouth or slight dizziness may occur, but usually disappear spontaneously with continued medication. Occasionally, symptoms of CNS stimulation have been observed. Weight gain has also been reported.

Asmafen Overdose

The main symptoms of acute over dosage include: Drowsiness to severe sedation; confusion and disorientation; tachycardia and hypotension; especially in children, hyper excitability or convulsions; reversible coma. Treatment should be symptomatic. If the drug has been taken recently, the stomach should be emptied. If necessary, symptomatic treatment and monitoring of the cardiovascular system; if excitation and convulsions are present: short acting barbiturates, benzodiazepines.

Asmafen Usage guidelines

Adults: 1mg (5ml syrup) twice daily. In patients susceptible to sedation a progressive regimen is recommended, commencing with 0.5mg (2.5ml syrup) twice daily and increasing to the full therapeutic dose of 1mg twice daily within 5 days. If necessary the dosage may be increased up to 2mg (10ml syrup) twice daily. Children aged up to 3 years: 2.5 mL twice daily, with meals. Children aged 3 years and above: 5mL twice daily, with meals. ASMAFEN oral solution should be store below 25°C and vigorously shaken before use.
