Topamax is a popular seizure medicine that belongs to a wide class of drugs that are called anticonvulsants. This medicine is regularly prescribed to prevent seizures, both in adult patients and in the case of children over 2 years of age. This medicine can also effectively prevent migraines. However, this drug cannot treat a migraine that has already started.

You must not stop your treatment with Topamax without your personal physician’s approval, even if you start to feel better after a couple of days, as this could trigger increased migraines and / or seizure attacks. Most patients have to take gradually lower doses of this medicine before they can end their treatment. If your seizures have worsened during your treatment with this medicine you should alert your personal physician as soon as possible. During your treatment with this product you should wear a medical bracelet or an ID card that states that you are using Topamax. A treatment with this medicine is known to sometimes trigger side effects that affect your reactions or your vision. During your treatment with this product you should avoid performing any hazardous activities or any activities that require mental or physical alertness (this also includes driving, operating complicated machinery, etc). While you are using this medicine you should avoid consuming any alcoholic beverages, as this worsens this medicine’s side effects.

During your treatment with Topamax you must not start a ketogenic diet (low in carbohydrates and high in proteins), as this is known to increase the risk of developing kidney stones. Before you start taking this medicine you should inform your personal physician if you are suffering from known allergies to any medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives or if you have:

• liver disease;
• kidney disorder;
• asthma, bronchitis or emphysema;
• glaucoma;
• recently undergone surgery.

Patients who have the medical conditions that have been listed here might not be allowed to start taking this medicine or might be prescribed a lower dose of Topamax. This medicine is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this product during pregnancy could trigger unpleasant birth defects. If you are pregnant or if you might become pregnant during your treatment with this medicine you should ask your personal health care provider if it is safe to start taking Topamax. A treatment with this medicine is known to decrease birth control pills’ effectiveness. Discuss with your personal health care provider an alternative contraceptive method. It has not been clearly determined whether this medicine’s ingredients are able to pass into the patient’s breast milk or not. If you are currently nursing an infant, you should ask your personal health care provider if it is safe to start taking this medicine.

Topamax Intake Guidelines

Ask your personal doctor how to use Topamax. You must not disobey any of your physician’s instructions. If you fail to understand some of them, you should ask a nurse or a pharmacist to properly explain them to you. You should also carefully read the instructions from the medicine’s label. Because this product is not known to cause stomach upset, it may be taken in either on an empty or on a full stomach. Each dose of Topamax should be accompanied by a full glass of water. You should try to swallow the tablets as a whole. During your treatment with this medicine you might have to undergo regular blood tests. Store Topamax in a place that is away from heat and moisture and which cannot be easily reached by pets and children.

If you suspect that you might be suffering from an overdose with Topamax you should seek emergency medical attention. The average symptoms that could be triggered by an overdose with this medicine include dizziness, drowsiness, depression or agitation, problems with balance or speech, blurred vision, chest pain, stomach pain, pounding or fast heartbeat, fainting, feeling light-headed, and seizures.

Topamax Missed Dose

If you miss one of your doses of Topamax you should take it as soon as you can. If it is time for another prescribed dose, skip the one that you have missed and proceed with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

Topamax Side Effects

You should stop your treatment with Topamax and alert your personal physician at once if you experience any of these severe and dangerous side effects:

• abnormal vision loss, pain behind or around your eyes;
• increased thirst, dry mouth, drowsiness, confusion, increased body temperature, decreased sweating, and dry, hot skin;
• vomiting, nausea, muscle weakness or pain, increased urination, feeling light-headed, fainting, fast heart rate, or seizure;
• severe back pain, difficult or painful urination.

You may continue your treatment with Topamax, but you should inform your physician as soon as possible, if you experience any of these less severe (but more common) side effects:

• memory problems, slowed thinking, trouble concentrating;
• tingling;
• numbness;
• depressed mood, anxiety, sleep problems;
• dizziness, headache;
• tiredness;
• weight loss;
• loss of appetite;
• changes in your natural behavior, nervousness, depression, or agitation.
