Atropine Information

Atropine produces many effects on the body. It is particularly useful in treating spasms and other internal conditions, and in reducing secretions from various body organs.

Atropine Indications

Atropine is specially formulated to treat conditions that include:

• Spasms (gastrointestinal tract, bladder, biliary tract)
• Colitis
• Spastic bladder
• Diverticulitis
• Infant colic
• Renal and biliary colic
• Peptic ulcer
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome
• Excessive stomach production
• Excessive secretion of the pancreas
• Excessive secretion of the nose, lungs, salivary glands, and stomach before surgery
• Excessive mucus (associated with diseases, infections, and allergies)
• Rigidity, tremor, excessive salivation, and sweating caused by Parkinson’s disease
• Heart conditions or disorders
• brain tumors
• Certain eye conditions

Atropine Warnings/Precautions

Atropine is not recommended for use by patients suffering from:

• Kidney disease
• Blockage of the urinary tract (difficulty urinating)
• Blockage in the intestines, severe Ulcerative Colitis, and Ulcerative Colitis complicated by toxic megacolon
• Glaucoma
• Myasthenia gravis

Inform your doctor if you have any of the conditions below before taking Atropine:

• Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
• Liver disease
• Ulcerative Colitis
• Thyroid problems
• High blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, or any type of heart disease
• Hiatal hernia or reflux disease
• Prostate enlargement
• Asthma, chronic lung disease or allergies

In any of the cases above, it may not be advisable to take Atropine. You may also be either given dosage adjustments or may need to undergo special monitoring during the treatment period.

Atropine belongs to a class of drugs known as FDA Pregnancy Category C. This entails that its effects to an unborn child is not known. In case you are pregnant or planning to be while under treatment with Atropine, inform your doctor immediately.

It is also not known if Atropine passes into breast milk. Nursing mothers are therefore advised to see their doctor before taking this drug.

Atropine Intake Instructions

Atropine must be taken as directed by your doctor. If there is any instruction that appears unclear to you, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Each tablet is taken whole with a full glass of water.

Atropine Missed Dose

Unless directed by your doctor, Atropine must not be double dosed. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember as long as it is not almost time for the next scheduled dose. Otherwise, skip missed dose and proceed with the next.

Atropine Overdose

Symptoms of over dosage include:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• dry mouth
• difficulty swallowing
• blurred vision
• dilated pupils
• hot, dry skin
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• confusion
• anxiety
• seizures
• weak pulse
• irregular heartbeat

If you feel any of the conditions above, seek medical help at once.

Atropine Side Effects

Stop intake of Atropine and seek medical help once you experience severe reactions such as:

• allergic reactions (such as difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, or hives, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face)
• irregular or fast heart rate
• rash or flushing
• eye pain

Other minor side effects may also be felt. In any of the cases below, continue use of Atropine and inform your doctor:

• headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness
• weakness or nervousness
• blurred vision, large pupils, sensitivity of the eyes to bright light
• nausea, bloating, heartburn, or constipation
• changes in taste
• difficulty urinating
• decreased sweating
• Nasal congestion, stuffiness, or dry mouth

For other possible side effects not mentioned that are particularly causing discomfort, tell your doctor immediately for the proper medical help.

Atropine Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the medications below before deciding to take Atropine:

• amantadine (Symmetrel)
• quinidine (Quinaglute, Cardioquin, Quinora, Quinidex)
• antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl, many others), brompheniramine (Dimetapp, Bromphen, many others), triprolidine (Actifed, others), and chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton, others), which are found in many over-the-counter and prescription cough, cold, and allergy medications
• decongestants and appetite suppressants such as phenylpropanolamine (Dexatrim, others), phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine, others), and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), which are also found in many over-the-counter and prescription products
• phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and prochlorperazine (Compazine)
• other commonly used phenothiazines, including fluphenazine (Prolixin), mesoridazine (Serentil), perphenazine (Trilafon), thioridazine (Mellaril), trifluoperazine (Stelazine), and promazine (Sparine)
• tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep), doxepin (Sinequan) and nortriptyline (Pamelor)
• other commonly used tricyclic antidepressants, including amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Tofranil), protriptyline (Vivactil), and trimipramine (Surmontil)
• digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps)
