Niacin Information

Niacin’s main ingredient is vitamin B3. This vitamin naturally occurs in animals and plants, and it is also often added to some foods as a vitamin supplement. This vitamin is used as a dietary supplement in the treatment or in the prevention of pellagra and niacin deficiencies. In larger doses, this medicine can also be used to lower dangerously high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol from the patient’s blood.

Niacin Indications

Niacin is a popular dietary supplement (that is used in the treatment of pellagra and niacin deficiencies), but also an effective medicine that is prescribed to patients who have abnormally high blood levels of triglycerides and cholesterol. However, this medicine could also be prescribed to treat (or to prevent) some other medical conditions that have not been listed here. 

Niacin Warnings

During your treatment with this medicine you should follow any exercise plan or diet that your physician has advised you to, because these are very important in the control of your cholesterol blood levels. You should take this medicine on a full stomach (in order to avoid experiencing stomach upset). During your intake of Niacin you might experience flushing and warmth of the ears, neck and face, as well as headache, itching or tingling. These side effects should normally lessen in time. You might also take an NSAID or an aspirin about half an hour before you take your dose of this medicine, in order to avoid these unpleasant side effects.  

During your intake of this medicine, you might suffer from dizziness, especially when rising from a lying or sitting position. You should not start taking this drug if you are suffering from stomach ulcer or from liver disorders. During your intake of this medicine you should avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, because alcohol is known to harmfully interact with this drug. Before you start a treatment with Niacin you must alert your personal physician if you are suffering from:

• kidney disease,
• heart disease,
• low blood pressure,
• a history of jaundice
• Gallbladder disease,
• muscle pain;
• glaucoma,
• diabetes,
• gout.

If you have any of these disorders, you might not be allowed to start taking this medicine, or you might have to take in a lower dose of this drug. Higher doses of Niacin make it a category C FDA pregnancy medicine. Therefore, this medicine could harm a growing fetus if it is taken during pregnancy. Avoid taking this drug if you are pregnant (or if you might be pregnant soon) without first consulting it you’re your physician. It has been clearly determined that this medicine’s ingredient (nicotine acid) is able to pass into breastmilk. Ask your personal physician if you may start to take this drug if you are breastfeeding an infant. 

Niacin Intake Guidelines

Follow each and every one of the advices and indications that your doctor has given you regarding your treatment with Niacin (do not deviate from any of them). This drug should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, in a place that is far from the reach of pets and children.

Niacin Dosage

Ask your doctor to calculate the dose of Niacin that suits you best. The correct dosage is known to vary from one case to another, as it depends on a couple of factors (among them: age, body weight, the disorder’s severity, sec, etc). Do not change the dose that you have been prescribed by your doctor without his or her consent.

Niacin Overdose

If you think that you have taken too much Niacin, you should seek medical care at once. Contact your local poison control centre and alert your personal doctor as soon as you can. The average Niacin overdose symptoms should include dizziness, nausea, itching, flushing, stomach upset, vomiting, etc.

Niacin Missed Dose

Niacin should be taken in on a regular basis. If you are following a treatment with this drug, try not to miss any of your prescribed doses. If you happen to miss one, you must apply it as soon as you recall and continue with your regular schedule. If it is time for another dose, you ought to skip the one that you have missed. You should not take a double dose of this drug unless you are instructed by your physician to do so.
