NORCURON (VECURONIUM BROMIDE)

Norcuron Information

Norcuron is a medicine that is also widely known under the generic name of Vecuronium Bromide. This medicine is known to paralyze the patient’s skeletal muscles. This medicine is able to do this because it can competitively bind to the organism’s cholinergic receptors, thus effectively antagonizing acetylcholine’s action (blocking all neuromuscular signals).

The patient who has been administered Norcuron should recover in about half an hour (40 minutes at most). After the patient has recovered after the operation he or she could experience difficulty speaking (this is one of this medicine’s side effects). However, this should disappear after this drug’s effects have completely worn off. The patient and his or her family should also know that several patients who have been administered this medicine have experienced Urinary Retention after the operation. Do not treat these side effects as they are supposed to disappear in time. This medicine is not suitable for patients who are suffering from hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to bromides or to vecuronium. This medicine must only be administered in the direct supervision of an authorized health care provider, in an equipped facility (hospital, clinic) where the patient can be closely monitored.

Norcuron is a category C FDA pregnancy medicine. Therefore, if it is taken during pregnancy, this drug could case harmful effects on a growing fetus. Ask your personal physician if it is safe to be administered this drug if you are already pregnant. It has not been clearly determined whether this medicine’s main ingredients are able to pass into the patient’s breast milk or not. Ask your personal physician what to do if you are currently breastfeeding an infant.
Children who have been administered Norcuron have proven to be more prone to experiencing this medicine’s side effects. They usually recover after more than 40 minutes. This drug should not be given to a newborn. Ask a pediatrician for more information regarding this matter. Elderly people have proven themselves to be more sensitive to Norcuron than younger adults. Some elderly patients have experienced a slightly delayed medicine onset action.

Patients who are suffering from biliary disease, from renal disorders or from any kind of hepatic medical condition could experience a longer neuromuscular blockade after they have been administered this medicine (this is probably due to reduced elimination of the medicine’s ingredients). In order to increase the regular volume of distribution, some patients had to be given higher doses of Norcuron. Also, patients who are suffering from malignant hyperthermia should be closely monitored after the operation. Patients who have Myasthenia gravis have severely responded to very small doses of this medicine. If you are suffering from this medical condition, you might not be allowed to use this medicine.

Norcuron Intake Guidelines

This medicine must only be administered by an authorized health care provider in a hospital, clinic or any other facility in which artificial respiration, intubation, reversal agents and oxygen are available immediately after the administration of Norcuron. The (unopened) sealed vial of this medicine must be stored at the average room temperature, away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight. After the medicine has been reconstituted, it should be refrigerated. This medicine must be used only once. Any unused vials must be discarded. This medicine must be kept away from the reach of any unauthorized persons, in order to avoid unwanted accidents.
