NOROXIN (NORFLOXACIN)

Noroxin Information

Noroxin is a popular medicine that is also widely known under the generic name of Norfloxacin. This medicine is an antibiotic that belongs to a well known class of medicines called fluoroquinolones. Such medicines have proven themselves to be highly effective in the treatment of patients who are suffering from bacterial infections (such as gonorrhea, Urinary Tract Infections, prostate infections, etc).

You must not start a treatment with Noroxin if you are suffering from known allergic reactions to Norfloxacin, or if you have tendon problems (such as tendon rupture). During your treatment with this drug you should avoid prolonged exposure to artificial UV rays or to sunlight, because this medicine is known to increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight (you might experience sunburn).  

During your treatment with Noroxin, you should drink plenty of water (several glasses of liquid per day), in order to avoid kidney damage. This drug should not be prescribed to a patient under 18 years old. Norfloxacin is known to sometimes interfere with the growing child’s bone development.

Before you start taking Noroxin, you should alert your personal physician if you are suffering from:

• Myasthenia gravis;
• Hypokalemia;
• a personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome";
• heart disorders (such as heart rhythm problems);
• kidney disease;
• liver disease;
• seizures or epilepsy.

If you do have any of the medical conditions that have been listed here, you may not be allowed to start taking this medicine, or you might have to use a lower dose of Noroxin. This medicine is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this medicine during pregnancy could harm a growing fetus. Ask your physician if you may start using this drug if you are pregnant or if you are planning to be so soon. It is not known that this medicine’s main ingredients are able to pass into breastmilk or not. Ask your personal physician if it is safe to start a treatment with this drug if you are currently breastfeeding an infant.

Noroxin Intake Guidelines

Follow the exact instructions that your personal doctor has given you regarding your treatment with Noroxin. This medicine should be taken on an empty stomach (2 hours after or 1 hour before a meal). You should accompany each dose of this drug with a glass of water. Norfloxacin (Noroxin) is not suitable in the treatment of viral infections such as flu or the common cold. Store this drug away from heat and moisture. Keep it away from the reach of pets and children.

Noroxin Dosage

Ask your personal doctor to tell you the dose of Noroxin that suits you best. The correct dosage can vary from one person to another, as it is known to depend on a couple of factors (among them: age, body weight, the severity of your disorder, general health condition, etc). You should not make any alterations to the dose that you have been prescribed by your physician without asking for your doctor’s consent to do so.

To give the proper results, Noroxin should be taken in on a regular basis. If you are following a treatment with this drug, you must try not to miss any of your prescribed doses. You should not take in a double dose of this medicine without your physician’s consent.

Noroxin Side Effects

If you develop any signs of an allergic reaction to this medicine (during your treatment with Noroxin), you should seek immediate medical attention. You should stop your treatment with Noroxin and alert your physician immediately if you experience any of these severe side effects:

• diarrhea that is bloody or watery;
• seizure (convulsions);
• sudden swelling or pain near your joints (especially in your ankle or arm);
• numbness, tingly feeling, pain, or weakness;
• nausea, low fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin).

You may continue taking this drug, but you should inform your doctor if you have any of these less severe side effects:

• headache, dizziness;
• mild nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach cramps, constipation, loss of appetite;
• increased sweating;
• diarrhea, gas, rectal pain;
• weakness;
• dry mouth.

Other side effects that have not been listed here may also occur when you take Noroxin. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience anything unusual while taking this medicine.
