Protonix (Pantoprazole)

Protonix Information

Protonix is also known as Pantoloc (in Canada) and Pantoprazole (generically). Protonix is used for the reduction of the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Protonix Indications

Protonix is a medicine indicated for the treatment of esophageal damage caused by GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also used for the treatment of excessive stomach acid production or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome)

Protonix may also be used for other purposes aside from the ones stated in this medical guide.

Protonix Warnings

This indigestion medication should be administered with care to patients who have liver diseases. At times, patients with liver problems are not advised to take Protonix depending on the degree or severity of the liver disease.

Protonix and Pregnancy:

Protonix belongs to the drugs in the FDA’s Pregnancy category B. It is not likely that Protonix may cause harm to the pregnant woman or the unborn baby. However, discuss the possible risks with your primary healthcare provider before taking this medication.

It is not known whether Protonix is passed into the breast milk or if it can cause harm to the nursing infant. Consult your doctor before deciding to breastfeed while following this acid reflux treatment.

Protonix Intake Guidelines

• Protonix should be taken exactly as your doctor prescribed the intake. Never deviate from your doctor’s instructions.
• Protonix should be taken with a full glass of water of about 6-8 ounces.
• Protonix can be taken with or without food.
• Do not crush, chew or break the tablet before swallowing. Swallow each tablet whole. Protonix tablets are especially formulated to be gradually absorbed by the body and chewing or breaking the tablet before intake defeats the purpose.
• Never abruptly cease your Protonix medication even if you begin to feel better. Follow your doctor’s prescribed duration of intake.

The dosage for Protonix can only be efficiently determined by your personal healthcare provider.

Protonix Overdose

Symptoms of a Protonix overdose have not been determined but if you suspect an overdose, immediately seek medical assistance.

Protonix Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose of Protonix you may take that missed dose as soon as you remember provided that it is not yet near the next dose. If you happen to remember just a few hours before the next dose, forego the missed dose and proceed with the next scheduled dose.

Protonix Side Effects

The most serious side effect associated with Protonix is allergies. If you happen to experience allergic reactions such as hives, swelling or closing of air passages and throat, immediately seek emergency medical assistance.

Other less serious side effects associated with Protonix include:

• Flatulence
• Stomach upsets
• Diarrhea
• Insomnia
• Rashes

Protonix Drug Reactions

• Ketoconazole
• Iron
