Blephamide Information

Blephamide is also known as sulfacetamide sodium and prednisolone acetate ophthalmic ointment, USP; a combined antibacterial and corticosteroid, sterile topical ophthalmic ointment.

With Chemical names:

• Sulfacetamide sodium: N-sulfanilylacetamide monosodium salt monohydrate.
• Prednisolone acetate: 11(beta), 17, 21-trihydroxypregna-1,4-diene-3, 20-dione, 21-acetate.

Contains the following:

• Actives: sulfacetamide sodium 10% and prednisolone acetate 0.2%.
• Preservative: phenylmercuric acetate (0.0008%)
• Inactives: mineral oil; white petrolatum; and petrolatum (and) lanolin alcohol.

What is sulfacetamide sodium and prednisolone acetate ophthalmic? Sulfacetamide sodium is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. Prednisolone acetate ophthalmic is a steroid used to treat swelling of the eyes caused by bacterial infections. Both Sulfacetamide sodium and Prednisolone acetate ophthalmic are used to treat eye bacterial infections.

Blephamide Indications

Do not use Blephamide if you have either of the following:

• Fungal or Viral infections in the eye.
• Had an allergic reaction to a sulfa-based drug.

Blephamide is used only to treat infections caused by bacteria. However, it is not known if by using Blephamide can harm an unborn child or passes into breast milk. If you are breast-feeding a baby or pregnant please consult your doctor before taking this medication.

Blephamide Warnings/Precautions

Blephamide is not for injections into the eye. The over extended use of corticosteroids may lead to ocular hypertension/glaucoma accompanied by damaging of the optic nerve. Defects in visual activity and fields of vision and in the subcapsular cataract area are also expected when use of corticosteroids is prolonged.

Susceptible individuals primarily Blacks are prone to experiencing acute anterior Uveitis.

Intraocular pressure should be regularly monitored even though it might be difficult in some uncooperative patients and children if the product is being used for 10 days or more.

The patient is advised to consult a physician and stop the use of medication if the inflammation or pain persists longer than 48 hours.

Blephamide Application Guidelines

Avoid touching the tube tip to eyelids or to any surface to prevent contamination because this product is sterile when packaged.

Blephamide may cause blurred vision, avoid hazardous activities such as driving and operating machinery.

If you are using contact lenses, use them only if your doctor approves. After applying your medication wait for at least 15 minutes before inserting your contact lenses.

Blephamide Dosage

For three or four times daily or twice a night apply a small amount (approximately ½ inch ribbon of ointment) in the conjunctival sac.

Initial prescription should not be more than 8 g.

It is possible to reduce the dosing of Blephamide, but be careful not to discontinue the therapy prematurely.

Blephamide Overdose

It is unlikely for an overdose with this medication. If incase you do suspect an overdoes, right away wash the eye with water and consult your doctor. If drops of the ointment have been swallowed quickly drink a lot of water and consult your doctor.

Blephamide Missed Dose

If you miss a dose apply the missed does as soon as you remembered, but if it is almost time for your next regular dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next regular dose as prescribed. Never use a double dose of this medication.

Blephamide Side Effects

There are no serious side effects to expect from this medication. However, you may be prone to experience any of the following.

• Burning
• Stinging
• Irritation
• Itching
• Redness
• Blurred Vision
• Eyelid Itching
• Eyelid Swelling
• Sensitivity to light

Continue to use Blephamide and talk to your doctor about any side effects including others not mentioned above.

Blephamide Drug Reactions

Tell your doctor if you are taking an oral steroid medication such as prednisone like Deltasone, Orasone, and others before using Blephamide.

Never use this medication with any other eyedrops that may contain nitrates like silver nitrate. Unless approve by your doctor it’s advisable to never use any other eye medications.
