Solu-Cortef Information

Solu-Cortef is a drug that belongs to a wide class of medicines also known as corticosteroids. Like most corticosteroids, this drug modifies the body's natural immune response to some conditions. As a result, a treatment with it is known to decrease inflammation.

Solu-Cortef can also be used to treat some conditions that have been associated with a decrease in the adrenal gland’s normal function. It can also be prescribed to patients who experience severe inflammation that has been caused by medical conditions such as severe asthma, serious allergies, Ulcerative Colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, certain blood diseases, some types of cancer (such as leukemia), lupus, multiple sclerosis, and some skin and eye conditions.

• you have allergic reactions to this drug or to some of its main ingredients
• you are also taking mifepristone
• you are suffering from a systemic fungal infection
• the possible patient is a premature baby
• you are planning to have a smallpox vaccine

You may not be advised to start taking this drug if you are suffering from some medical conditions. Alert your doctor if:

• you are allergic to drugs, foods, preservatives, dyes or any other substances
• you have bleeding problems, heart attack or other heart problems (such as congestive heart failure), kidney disorders, high blood pressure, liver problems, seizures, diabetes, adrenal gland disorders, an underactive thyroid, mood or mental problems, low K levels in your blood
• you have or if you have recently suffered from a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection; this includes: herpes eye infection; measles; chickenpox; shingles
• you are suffering from HIV or tuberculosis (TB);
• you had a positive TB test

Solu-Cortef Intake Guidelines

Ask your doctor how and when it is appropriate to take Solu-Cortef. You can also rely on the instructions written on the drug’s label (or package). If you have any other questions, you should ask a doctor a pharmacist or a nurse.  

A dose of this drug is usually administered as an injection at a hospital, clinic or a doctor's office. Avoid using a drug that is cloudy, discolored or that contains particles. You must not take a dose of a medicine that has a damaged or cracked vial.

If you are suffering from an overdose with Solu-Cortef you may experience some bothersome symptoms such as fainting, dizziness, fever, low blood pressure, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pain, low blood sugar, etc. If you experience any of these symptoms, you may have overdosed. In this case, contact your local poison control centre as soon as you can.

A treatment with Solu-Cortef can trigger some bothersome side effects, Some of this drug’s most common side effects are acne; dizziness; clumsiness; general body discomfort; facial flushing; feeling of whirling motion; increased appetite; headache; nausea; increased sweating; swelling; nervousness; pain or redness at the site of the injection; upset stomach; sleeplessness.

Other severe side effects that can occur during or shortly after your treatment with Solu-Cortef are tightness of the chest; serious allergic reactions (such as hives; rash; breathing difficulties; itching; swelling of the face, lips, mouth or tongue); tarry or black stools; changes in menstrual periods; changes in body fat; skin color changes; abnormal bleeding or bruising; chest pain; mood or mental changes (such as depression); muscle weakness, pain or wasting; swelling of the legs or of the feet; sever vomiting or nausea; seizures; sudden headache or dizziness; infection symptoms (such as sore throat, fever, chills); bone or tendon pain; skin thinning; abnormal weight gain; unusual skin sensation; vision changes; eye disorders, etc.  

Your treatment with Solu-Cortef can also trigger some other side effects that have not been mentioned here. This is why you should immediately alert your personal physician if you experience anything unusual or bothersome during your treatment with this drug.

Solu-Cortef Drug Reactions

Some drugs available in pharmacies can interact with your treatment with this drug. This is why you should ask for your personal physician’s approval if you want to start a treatment with any other drugs, especially if they are:

• Barbiturates (such as phenobarbital), lithium, carbamazepine, hydantoins (such as phenytoin), or rifampin – these medicines are known to sometimes decrease Solu-Cortef’s effectiveness
• Aprepitant, cyclosporine, clarithromycin, hormonal contraceptives (also known as birth control pills), diltiazem, erythromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, or troleandomycin – intake of these medicines during your treatment with Solu-Cortef can trigger bothersome side effects such as nervous system disorders, seizures or adrenal gland diseases;
• Aspirin, ritodrine, mifepristone – these drug;s side effects and actions are usually increased by the intake of Solu-Cortef
• Live vaccines
