Sandomigran Information

Sandomigran is a drug that is normally prescribed to prevent symptoms also known as “vascular headaches”. These “vascular headaches” include cluster headaches, migraines, and vasomotor headaches. These symptoms are thought to be triggered by some temporary changes that occur in the size of the brain’s small blood vessels. These changes can also cause vision problems (these mostly occur during one of the severe migraines). A treatment with this drug should prevent such an attack because its actions stop the blood vessels from changing their size. This drug is only useful in the prevention of such attacks. However, taking Sandomigran will not help you stop an attack that has already started. This drug is not known to cause an addiction.

Sandomigran Indications

This drug is normally prescribed to patients that suffer from “vascular headaches” (it helps prevent these attacks). However, some physicians can prescribe Sandomigran in the treatment of some other disorders that have not been mentioned here.

Sandomigran Warnings

You should not take this drug to treat a severe migraine that has already started (it is only used to prevent these attacks). You should not start taking this drug without first asking for your personal doctor’s approval. Sandomigran should not be used to treat common “tension” migraines.

During your treatment with Sandomigran, you should be careful if you have to operate complicated devices or machinery or if you have to perform any hazardous activities that require mental or physical alertness. A treatment with Sandomigran can sometimes cause drowsiness, especially in the early stages of your treatment. You should avoid drinking alcohol during your treatment with Sandomigran, because this can increase the drug’s side effects (especially the feeling of drowsiness).

You might not be allowed to start taking this drug if you have allergic reactions to pizotifen (this is Sandomigran’s active ingredient) or if you are allergic to any other substances like dyes, foods or preservatives. If you experience an allergic reaction to this drug, you might develop some of the following side effects: breath shortness, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or some other body parts, itching, hives, rashes, wheezing or breathing difficulties. You must not take a dose of Sandomigran that has expired. Do not intake a dose of this drug from a pack that has been torn or that shown tampering signs. 

Before you start a treatment with Sandomigran, you should inform your personal physician if you are suffering from any of the following medical disorders:

1. increased eyes pressure (this is usually determined by glaucoma)
2. prostate disorders

In these cases, your doctor might want to give you a lowered dose of Sandomigran, or he might want to monitor your treatment with this drug. This medicine has not been properly tested on pregnant women. Therefore, the effects that a treatment with Sandomigran has on a pregnant woman are not clear. You should ask your doctor if it is safe to start taking this drug if you are pregnant or if you are planning to be pregnant soon. Some of Sandomigran’s ingredients can and sometimes do pass into breastmilk. You should ask for your doctor’s consent / opinion before you start taking this drug if you are breastfeeding an infant. 

Sandomigran Intake Guidelines

You should ask your doctor how to take this drug. It is recommended that you should not disobey any of his or her advices regarding your treatment with Sandomigran (you can also rely on the instructions that are written on the drug’s package). If you fail to understand some of these instructions, you should ask a pharmacist, a doctor or a nurse for additional explanations.

Sandomigran Dosage

Ask your doctor to tell you the correct dose of Sandomigran that you should take in. You must not change the dosage that your physician has prescribed you in any way. The average starting dose of Sandomigran consists of one tablet per day. In order to avoid drowsiness, this dose can be gradually increased (it sometimes reaches three tablets per day). However, if the headaches persist, your personal physician could prescribe you a maximum dose of 9 tablets per day (these can be divided in about two or three doses).

Your doctor could advise you to take all your prescribed tablets of Sandomigran together (usually at night). However, he or she might advise you to divide the number of tablets in 2 or 3 doses taken throughout the day.

It is recommended that you accompany each dose of Sandomigran with a glass of water. You can take this drug on a full or on an empty stomach, because a treatment with Sandomigran is not known to cause stomach upset.

Sandomigran Overdose

If you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with this drug, you should contact your local poison control centre. Alert your doctor of this as soon as possible. Immediately telephone your doctor. The average Sandomigran overdose symptoms can include nausea, drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness, coma, slow breathing or convulsions.

Sandomigran Missed Dose

Try to take this drug regularly. If you miss a dose of Sandomigran, ask your doctor for instructions.

Sandomigran Side Effects

You should inform your doctor if you experience anything bothersome during your treatment with Sandomigran.
