BENZAC (BENZOYL PEROXIDE TOPICAL)

Benzac Information

Benzac is a drug also generically known under the name of Benzoyl Peroxide Topical. Benzac has a mild drying and an antibacterial effect that helps wash away dirt and excessive oils from the skin. 

Benzac Indications

Benzac tends to be prescribed in the treatments of patients who have severe acne.

Benzac Warnings

Benzac is a medicine that should not be applied on wind burned, sunburned, chapped, dry or irritated skin. Benzac should not be applied on areas with eczema or on wounds either.  You should let all these conditions heal before you start a treatment with Benzac (Benzoyl Peroxide Topical). In this way, you will avoid any further unpleasant complications.
This drug is a Category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, the effect that Benzac has on the carrying mother or on the growing fetus is not known. If you are currently pregnant or if you want to be soon, you should discuss it with your personal doctor before starting a treatment with this drug. It is not clear whether Benzac can pass into breast milk or not. If you are breastfeeding your child you should not start taking this drug without your doctor’s consent.   

Benzac Intake Guidelines

Follow the exact instructions that your personal doctor gave you regarding your treatment with Benzac (do not disobey any of them). If you have any further questions you wish to find answers to, you should ask your doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse. You can also rely on the instructions on the drug’s label.
Normally, Benzac should be applied like this:

• Wash your hands before you apply the drug on the skin.
• Clean and dry the area on which you want to apply Benzac.
• Shake the Benzac lotion before you apply it.
• Apply the drug to the desired area. Avoid contact with your eyes, broken skin, lips, mouth and with the inside of your nose or mouth. If you put Benzac in these areas, wash them with plenty of water. 
• After applying the drug you must not cover the area that you have treated with Benzac unless you were told by your doctor to do so. If too much drug is absorbed by your body it can have serious and harmful effects.

Benzac is normally applied up to three times per day. If you experience dryness, irritation or painful burning you should stop you treatment and ask your doctor for further advice. He might tell you to reduce the frequency of application.
You should not stop using Benzac without first consulting it with your doctor even if you see no effects (it can take up to several weeks for the treatment’s effects to appear).

Benzac Dosage

Ask your doctor to calculate your correct dose of Benzac (the one that suits you best). The dosage varies from one patient to another, because it usually depends on a couple of factors.

Benzac Overdose

Over dosage of Benzac is very rare.  However, if you suppose that you are suffering from overdose with this medicine or if you have ingested Benzac you should seek immediate medical attention (contact the nearest poison control center, inform your personal physician).  

Benzac Missed Dose

Try to take Benzac at definite periods of time. If you are following a treatment with Benzac, you must try not to miss any dose. If you do miss one, please take it as soon as you can and then continue with your dosing schedule. If it is almost time for another dose, simply skip the one that you have missed and proceed with your regular dosing schedule. It is not recommended to take in a double dose of this drug without asking for your doctor’s permission.

Benzac Side Effects

No severe side effects should occur during your treatment with Benzac. However, taking Benzac can sometimes lead to some serous side effects such as:

• Breath shortness
• Throat closing
• Swelling of the tongue, lips, face or hives

If you find yourself experiencing any of these dangerous side effects, you should stop your treatment with Benzac. You need to seek medical attention at once. Inform your doctor as soon as you can.
Benzac may also trigger other more common but fortunately less serious side effects such as: tingling, burning, redness, itching, peeling, dryness, or any other irritations. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed here you should continue using Benzac but tell your personal physician of this matter. 
Some other side effects may also occur when you are taking Benzac. Inform your personal physician immediately if you happen to experience anything abnormal during treatment.

Benzac Drug Reactions

You should avoid using Benzac if you are currently following a treatment with tretinoin (Renova, Altinac, Avita, Retin-A) because this can result ion severe skin irritation.
Avoid using abrasive, harsh, or irritating cleansers, cosmetics and perfumes the area treated with Benzac.
Benzoyl Peroxide Topical can interact with sunscreen that contains PABA, leading to temporary skin discoloration.
