Questran Information

Questran is a popular medicine that is widely known under the generic name of Cholestyramine. This medicine is a product that is able to effectively lower the patient’s blood cholesterol levels, in order to prevent arteriosclerosis and other types of heart disorders.

Questran should be accompanied by a proper exercise and diet plan that is generally determined by the patient’s doctor. Do not deviate from any of your physician’s instructions. You must not breathe in or ingest the dry powder form of this medicine, as this could trigger severe allergic reactions. During your treatment with this medicine you should drink plenty of fluids, in order to avoid experiencing constipation (at least 8 glasses of water or juice per day).

Do not take in any other drugs 6 hours after or one hour before you have used this medicine, as this could decrease your treatment’s effectiveness. Patients who are suffering from complete biliary tract blockage or from phenylketonuria must not start a treatment with Questran. Ask your personal physician for more information regarding this particular matter.
 
Some medical disorders are known to sometimes harmfully interact with a treatment with this medicine, preventing the patient from using Questran. You should alert your personal health care provider if you are suffering from any of the medical conditions that are listed below as you might not be allowed to use this medicine or you might have to be given lower doses of this product (furthermore, your intake of Questran should be closely monitored by an authorized health care provider):

• Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid),
• diabetes,
• kidney disorder,
• liver disorder,
• Hemorrhoids or constipation.

It is known that Questran is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, it has not been clearly established whether an intake of this medicine during pregnancy could harm a growing fetus (causing severe birth defects) or not. Pregnant female patients must not start taking this drug without their physician’s approval. It is known that a treatment with this product could decrease the regular absorption of some minerals and / or vitamins, which could affect a nursing infant. If you are currently breastfeeding a baby, you should ask your personal health care specialist if it is safe to star a treatment with this medicine.

Questran Intake Guidelines

Ask your doctor to give you a set of precise instructions regarding your treatment with Questran. Do not disobey any of your physician’s advices. In case you did not completely understand some of them, you should ask a nurse or a pharmacist for additional explanations. Read the medicine’s label for further information about this medicine.

The Questran powder should be mixed with cereal, soup, a noncarbonated beverage, or pulpy fruit like crushed pineapple or applesauce. Store this product at the average room temperature, in a place that should not be reached by any pets or children. Keep it in a cool and dry place (not in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink), away from direct sunlight.

Questran Overdose

If you suspect that you might be suffering from an overdose with this medicine you should seek immediate medical attention. The average symptoms that could be triggered by an overdose with Questran should include abdominal pain, intestinal blockage, etc.

Questran Missed Dose

Avoid missing any of your prescribed doses of Questran. A missed dose of this product should be used as soon as possible. Ask your personal physician for further indications. Do not take double doses of this medicine without your doctor’s consent, as this could increase your risk of developing overdose.

Questran Side Effects

You should stop your treatment with Questran as soon as possible and alert your personal physician at once if you develop any of this medicine’s severe side effects:

• symptoms of an allergic reaction to this product’s ingredients(hives; throat closure; difficulty breathing; swelling of your tongue, lips, or face);
• chest pain;
• increased heart beat;
• bloody, black, or tarry stools;
• abnormal bruising or bleeding.

 A treatment with Questran could also trigger some other less severe but much more common side effects such as:

• constipation;
• cramps, abdominal pain, flatulence or bloating;
• vomiting, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea, decreased appetite or heartburn;
• hiccups;
• headache;
• drowsiness or dizziness.

 A treatment with Questran could also trigger some other side effects that have not been mentioned here. Alert your personal doctor as soon as possible if you develop anything unusual or bothersome during your treatment with this drug.

Questran Drug Reactions

Avoid using any other medicines during your treatment with Questran as their regular absorption and / or effectiveness will probably be decreased.
