Prograf Information

Prograf is a popular medicine that is generally known under the name of Tacrolimus. This product is able to effectively lower the patient’s immune system. This medicine is generally prescribed to patients who have recently had an organ transplant (kidney or liver transplant), in order to prevent the organism from rejecting the organ.

A prolonged treatment with Prograf is known to increase the patient’s risk of developing some forms of cancer (mostly skin cancer). Patients who are following a treatment with this medicine should avoid exposing themselves to UV rays (tanning beds or sunlamps) and to direct sunlight. If exposure is unavoidable you should wear protective clothing and use an effective sunscreen.

During your intake of this medicine you should avoid consuming any products that contain grapefruit, as this is known to harmfully interact with a treatment with this medicine. Taking Prograf sometimes lowers the patient’s number of white blood cells (these are supposed to ensure that your organism can effectively fight infections).

Several patients who have been treated with this medicine after a transplant have experienced diabetes that has been linked to their treatment with this medicine. This is more common among African-American or Hispanic patients. In order to see if your treatment with Prograf is working properly, you will probably have to undergo regular blood tests or liver or kidney function tests. You should avoid missing any of the appointments that you will schedule with your personal health care specialist. 

Some medical disorders are known to sometimes harmfully interact with a treatment with Prograf. This is why, patients who are suffering from any of the medical disorders that are listed below should not be allowed to start taking this medicine or should be prescribed lower doses of this medicine (moreover, their treatment with this drug should be monitored by an authorized health care provider to see its results):

• allergic reaction to castor oil;
• liver disorder;
• kidney disorder;
• high blood pressure.

Prograf is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. It has not been clearly determined whether a treatment with this medicine during pregnancy could harm a growing fetus or not. This is why pregnant patients must not start taking this medicine without first consulting it with their personal health care provider. During your intake of this product you should use an effective birth control method, in order to avoid an unwanted pregnancy (preferably, a non hormonal one such as diaphragm or condoms). It has not been established whether this drug’s main components are able to pass into the patient’s breast milk or not. Female patients who are currently nursing a baby should ask their personal physician if it is safe to start taking Prograf. Do not give this product to a child without first consulting it with a pediatrician. It has been established that children and elderly patients are generally more prone to experiencing this drug’s severe side effects.

Prograf Intake Guidelines

We strongly advise you to ask your personal doctor to tell you exactly how you should take your each and every one of your doses of Prograf. Do not deviate from any of his or her instructions. If you somehow failed to understand some of them, you should refer to a nurse or to a pharmacist and ask him or her for further explanations. Prograf is generally administered as an injection into a vein. This medicine should be given shortly after the organ transplant. After you have been administered this product you will have to be tested on a regular basis to see if you have developed an allergic reaction to this medicine. Afterwards, you may start taking the Prograf pills.

A capsule of this medicine should be taken every 12 hours. Store this product in a cool, dry place, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Do not keep it in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in a place that could be easily reached by pets or children. Ask your personal pharmacist how you can properly dispose of any unused medicine.

If you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with Prograf you are probably in need of immediate medical attention. You should alert your personal physician and your local poison control centre as soon as possible. If necessary, we advise you to go to the nearest emergency room where you should receive a proper treatment for your medical condition. We have no information regarding the possible symptoms of an overdose with Prograf.

Prograf Missed Dose

Try to take each dose of Prograf at its scheduled time. However, if you happen to miss taking one of your doses of this drug you should use it as soon as you can. Do not take double doses of this medicine without your personal physician’s approval.
