BACTROBAN (Mupirocin Topical)

Bactroban Information

Bactroban is an antibiotic with a generic name known as Mupirocin Topical. Bactroban help prevents bacteria from growing on your skin.

Bactroban Indications

Bactroban is used to cure infections of the skin such as Impetigo due to:

• Streptococcus aureus
• Beta-hemolytic streptococcus
• Streptococcus pyogenes

Bactroban Warnings

Bactroban should not be use for treatment if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it. If you have a very big open wound, do not use Bactroban. This medication contains an ingredient called polyethylene glycol, which may cause harm to the kidneys if large amount of drug is absorbed through the skin.

Bactroban is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Bactroban passes into the breast milk and may affect an infant being nursed. If you are breast-feeding a baby, talk to your doctor first before using Bactroban. Also, tell your doctor if you are pregnant before taking Bactroban.

Bactroban Intake Guidelines

Use bandages that allow air circulation over the affected area. Use only closed bandages if otherwise directed by your doctor. Use a light, cotton gauze dressing to protect clothing. Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, nose, or mouth or in large, open wounds.

If Bactroban gets in your eyes or mouth, rinse immediately with water. Consult a poison control if Bactroban is ingested.

Bactroban Dosage

Use Bactroban exactly as instructed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Wash your hands before and after using Bactroban. The affected area should be clean and dry. A little amount of the ointment should be applied three times daily or as directed by doctor or pharmacist. Use this medication for the full amount of time prescribed by your doctor or as recommended in the package even if you begin to feel better.

Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured. Improvement should be noticed within three (3) to five (5) days. Patient not showing clinical response within three to five days should be reevaluated. Consult your doctor if the infection gets worse or does not improve.

Bactroban Overdose

An overdose of Bactroban is not common. You should consult a doctor if you suspect an overdose. No symptoms of an overdose are known.

Bactroban Missed Dose

The missed dose should be applied as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and apply only the regular amount of Bactroban. Do not use a double dose of this medication unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

• Redness
• Peeling
• Dryness
• Skin irritation
