Pletal is a popular drug that is more commonly known under the generic name of Cilostazol. This product is able to widen the patient’s arteries that should supply the legs with blood, thus improving circulation (it stops the blood platelets from clotting or from sticking together).

Patients who are suffering from congestive heart failure should not start a treatment with this medicine, as this could worsen their initial medical condition. In some cases, the treatment’s benefic effects may not be seen during the first month f intake. Do not stop using this medicine without first consulting it with your personal physician. However, if you feel that your symptoms have worsened during your intake of Pletal you should alert your personal health care specialist as soon as possible.

Pletal is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, intake of this medicine during pregnancy could result in severe birth defects and / or birth complications. You should not start using this medicine if you are pregnant (ask your doctor if you may). During your treatment with this drug you should use an effective birth control method in order to avoid becoming pregnant. It has been clearly determined that this medicine’s main components are able to pass into the female patient’s breast milk. Patients who are currently nursing an infant must not start using this drug (Pletal) without their physician’s approval. Consult with a pediatrician before giving this medicine to a child. It is known that elderly patients and children might be more prone to developing this drug’s severe side effects.

Pletal Intake Guidelines

Ask your personal health care specialist to give you a set of precise instructions regarding your intake of Pletal. Do not deviate from any of your doctor’s directions. If you did not completely understand some of them you should ask a nurse or a pharmacist for further explanations. Each dose of Pletal should be accompanied by a full glass of liquid (juice or water). This drug is regularly taken in 2 times per day 2 hours after or 30 minutes before a main meal (usually dinner or breakfast). Try to take your doses of Pletal at regular time intervals. This drug should be stored at the average room temperature, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. It is best to keep it in a place that cannot be easily reached by either pets or children (in order to avoid unpleasant and possibly dangerous accidents such as poisoning). Do not keep this drug in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink. Ask a pharmacist to tell you how to properly dispose of any unused medication.

Pletal Overdose

If you suspect that you might be suffering from an overdose with this medicine we strongly advise you to seek medical care at once. Alert your personal physician and your local poison control centre. Patients who are suffering from overdose with this medicine (Pletal) are likely to experience diarrhea, severe headache, fainting, light-headedness, and uneven or fast heartbeat.

Pletal Missed Dose

If you miss one of your scheduled doses of Pletal we recommend you to take it as soon as possible. If it is time for another dose, skip the one that you have missed and continue your regular treatment. Avoid using double doses of this medicine (Pletal) without your physician’s approval.

Pletal Side Effects

Pletal’s side effects include:

• severe headache;
• painful urination or bloody urine;
• flu-like symptoms fever, body aches, chills;
• chest pain;
• breath shortness;
• swelling of your feet and / or ankles;
• pounding or fast pulse;
• vomiting;
• diarrhea;
• dizziness;
• weakness;
• leg cramps;
• tingling;
• numbness;
• joint pain.

Pletal Drug Reactions

During your treatment with Pletal you should avoid taking any of these medicines:

• Clopidogrel (Plavix);
• Esomeprazole (Nexium), Omeprazole (Zegerid, Prilosec);
• Clarithromycin (Biaxin) or Erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E.E.S., Erythrocin, E-Mycin);
• Fluconazole (Diflucan), Ketoconazole (Nizoral), or Itraconazole (Sporanox);
• Diltiazem (Tiazac, Cardizem);
• Sertraline (Zoloft), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Fluvoxamine (Luvox), or Nefazodone (Serzone).
