Aventyl Information

Aventyl is a drug that belongs to the class of drugs known as Tricyclic antidepressants. The generic name for Aventyl is nortriptyline and Aventyl has been known in the market as Aventyl HCL and Pamelor.

Aventyl Indications

Aventyl is prescribed for the treatment of depression indicated by a sad feeling, feeling of worthlessness, diminished interest in life, tiredness, hopelessness, oversleeping, changes in eating habits, and frequent thoughts and contemplations of death and suicide.

Aventyl works by balancing the chemicals in the brain that are responsible for the cause of depression.

Aventyl may also be used for other functions aside from the ones mentioned above.

Aventyl Warnings

Taking Aventyl may cause drowsiness and dizziness, avoid activities which require you to be mentally and physically alert at all times such as driving or operating a machine.

Postural hypotension may also occur when rising from a sitting or lying position and may cause dizziness when you are on Aventyl medication. When you are on a sitting or lying position, be careful to rise slowly.

Alcohol should be avoided if possible but if not, alcoholic beverages must be drunk in moderation as it may further aggravate dizziness.

Also tell your doctor if you have the following medical conditions because taking Aventyl may not be entirely beneficial to you. You may not be advised to take Aventyl or your dosage may be significantly lowered if you have any of the following medical problems:

• Kidney problems
• Stomach or intestine malfunctions
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Glaucoma
• Enlarged prostate
• Trouble in urination
• Has had a heart attack for the last six months
• Thyroid disease
• Asthma

Aventyl has also not been tested on pregnant women yet and it is not known if taking Aventyl can cause harm to the fetus or to the pregnant mother. It is also not known whether the active ingredients of Aventyl are passed into the breast milk. Before to planning to breast feed your infant or to drink Aventyl while pregnant when on Aventyl medication, it is advised that you consult your doctor first.

Aventyl Intake Guidelines

Take Aventyl as exactly directed by your doctor. Never deviate or modify your doctor’s instructions on how to take Aventyl.

Each dose of Aventyl must be taken with a full glass of water of about 6-8 ounces.

It may take a while before you feel the effects on Aventyl. It usually takes up to 4 weeks before the effects can become apparent. Never stop taking Aventyl without first consulting your doctor about it.

If a dose of Aventyl is missed, it is not advisable that double doses of this medicine be taken. If you happen to miss a dose, the logical choice would be to take it as soon as you remember provided that it is not yet near the time for your next dose, that way; you won’t be in danger of overdose. However, if you remember taking the medicine at a time near your next dose, it is wise to just forego it.

Aventyl Side Effects

• Allergic reactions characterized by the swelling of lips, throat and mouth, hives, rashes and the closing of throat and aerial passages.
• Arrhythmia
• Heart attack
• Hypertension
• Difficulty in excretion of urine
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Weight loss and change in appetite
• Drowsiness and Dizziness
• Constipation
• Tremors
• Ringing in the ears
• Excessive sweating

If you experience any of these side effects and if it becomes intolerable or bothersome, hasten to consult a medical professional immediately.

Aventyl Drug Reactions

Aventyl is not advised for patients who are taking or have recently taken the following drugs:

• MAOI – monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as Marplan, Nardil, Parnate
• Alcohol, pain relievers, sedatives, tranquilizers and muscle relaxants - this can aggravate the drowsing effect of Aventyl. Use these drugs with caution.

Other drugs not mentioned above may also be not advised for intake together with Aventyl. Always inform your doctor of the drugs that you have taken or are currently taking before going on Aventyl medication.
