Betoptic Information

Betoptic, with the generic name of Betaxolol Ophthalmic, belongs to a class of drugs known as beta-blockers that reduces pressure inside the eye.

Betoptic Indications

Betoptic is used to treat:

• Glaucoma
• High pressure in the eyes

Betoptic Warnings/Precautions

Before deciding to take Betoptic, inform your doctor if you have:

• Asthma or chronic lung disease
• Very slow heart rate
• Heart disease (high blood pressure, heart failure, heart block)
• Diabetes
• Overactive thyroid

In any of the above cases, it may not be advisable to take Betoptic. You may also be given dosage alterations or may need to undergo special monitoring during the treatment period.

Betoptic is in FDA Pregnancy Category C. This entails that its effects to an unborn child is not certain. Should you be pregnant or planning to be, have a talk with your doctor before taking this drug.

It is not known if Betoptic passes into breast milk. Therefore breastfeeding mothers are strongly advised to see their doctor before deciding to take this medication.

Betoptic Intake Instructions

Betoptic must be applied as directed by your physician. If there is any instruction that appears unclear to you, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

Below are the guidelines for proper handling and application of this product:

• Always wash your hands before using the eye drops.
• Remove contact lenses (if you are wearing any) before applying Betoptic.
• Shake Betoptic S eyedrops well.
• Tilt your head slightly and pull down on the lower eyelid.
• Position dropper just above the eye.
• Look up and away from the dropper.
• Squeeze out a drop and close the eye.
• Apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of the eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining down the tear duct.
• If your medication requires more than 1 drop on the same eye, repeat process with a 5 minute interval.
• Follow same procedure on the other eye if needed.
• Use regularly to get the most benefit of Betoptic.

Never allow the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes and hands so as to prevent eye infections. Do not use a discolored eye drop or when you notice particles in it.

Betoptic Missed Dose

Unless directed by your doctor, Betoptic must not be double dosed. If you happen to miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember as long as it is not almost time for the next scheduled dose. Otherwise, skip missed dose and proceed with the next.

Betoptic Overdose

Symptoms of over dosage include:

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Shortness of breath
• Slow heart rate
• Difficulty in breathing
• Wheezing
• Heart attack

Should you feel any of the conditions above or if you have accidentally ingested some drops, seek immediate medical assistance.

Betoptic Side Effects

Stop application of Betoptic and see your doctor if you experience any of the following severe side effects:

• Allergic reactions (difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or hives
• Asthma attack (shortness of breath or wheezing)
• Congestive heart failure

Minor side effects that are more likely to occur include:

• Burning and stinging
• Headache
• Fainting
• Fatigue
• Nausea
• Depression
• Irregular heartbeat, slow heartbeat, or low blood pressure

In any of the less severe cases above, just continue application of Betoptic and see your doctor.

For other possible side effects that are particularly causing discomfort, inform your physician immediately.

Betoptic Drug Interactions

Unless directed by your physician, never use other eye medications while under treatment with Betoptic.

Inform your doctor if you are using other beta-blockers by mouth, such as:

• Propranolol (Inderal)
• Atenolol (Tenomin)
• Metoprolol (Lopressor)

Using these medications along with Betoptic may increase the chance of having side effects.
