DYRENIUM (Triamterene)

Dyrenium Information

Dyrenium is a drug under the family called triamterene, which is in a class of drugs called potassium-sparing diuretics. Dyrenium is used to reduce the amount of fluid in the body without causing the loss of potassium.

Dyrenium Indications

Dyrenium is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and Edema.

Dyrenium Warnings

Before taking Dyrenium, tell your doctor if you experience any of the following;

• kidney disease
• liver disease
• diabetes mellitus
• high level of potassium in the blood

Dyrenium is in the FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Dyrenium is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. However, do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

Dyrenium passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. If you are breast-feeding a baby, do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor.

Dyrenium Intake Guidelines

Each dose can be taken with a full glass of water. If stomach upset occurs, you may take each dose with food or milk.

Take Dyrenium early in the day to avoid nighttime urination unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Doses recommended by the physician should be followed properly. Do not take higher doses than directed by doctor or pharmacist.

Do not stop taking Dyrenium suddenly if you feel better. Doing such may cause your condition to worsen.

Dyrenium Dosage

Take Dyrenium exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.

Dyrenium Overdose

Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose of Dyrenium occurs.

Symptoms of a Dyrenium overdose include:

• irregular heartbeat
• lethargy
• fatigue
• weakness
• drowsiness
• dizziness
• confusion
• shortness of breath
• nausea
• vomiting

Dyrenium Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible, then try to evenly space the rest of the doses for that day until you can return to a normal schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Dyrenium Side Effects

Stop taking Dyrenium and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if symptoms of a Dyrenium side effect occur.

Symptoms of a Dyrenium side effect include the following:

• difficulty in breathing
• closing of the throat
• swelling of the lips
• swelling of the tongue
• swelling of the face
• hives
• irregular heartbeat
• shortness of breath
• fatigue
• confusion
• weakness
• numbness
• tingling caused by high levels of potassium in the blood
• decreased urination

Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue taking Dyrenium and talk to your doctor if you experience:

• nausea
• diarrhea
• decreased appetite
• headache
• dizziness
• dry mouth
• bloating
• muscle cramps
• lowering of the voice
• excessive hair growth
• enlarged breasts

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if they persist and continue to bother you.

• high blood pressure
• water retention
• heart problems
• prostate problems
