Dapsone is a drug known as an anti-infective medicine with a generic name of dapsone.

Dapsone Indications

Dapsone is recommended for the treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis. Dapsone is also used for treating leprosy and or Hansen’s disease.

Dapsone Warnings

Dapsone is not known if it can cause harm to the pregnant woman or the unborn baby. Dapsone is a drug in the pregnancy category C. No studies have yet proven if Dapsone can affect pregnancy and cause birth defects. Dapsone passes into the breast milk. If you are nursing an infant, consult your doctor first before taking Dapsone.

If you have medical conditions such as:

• G6PD deficiency or the lack of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the body
• Hemoglobin M deficiency or the lack of methemoglobin reductase in the body
• Liver problems

You may not be advised to take Dapsone or you may be prescribed a lower dosage if you have any of the mentioned medical problems.

Taking Dapsone may increase your sensitivity to light and heat. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun without protection.

Dapsone Intake Guidelines

Dapsone Missed Dose

Do not double dose Dapsone. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember provided that it is not yet near the next dose. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, forego that dose you missed and proceed with the next dose of Dapsone.

Dapsone Side Effects

Among the possible side effects associated with Dapsone intake are:

• Bluish tinge in skin color
• Muscle weakness
• Difficulty in breathing
• Allergic reactions
• Dark colored urine
• Pale stools
• Unusual body tiredness
• Stomach and pain in the abdomen
• Numbness or tingling sensations
• Nausea and vomiting
• Blurred and changed vision
• Ringing in the ears
• Headache
• Insomnia
• Photosensitivity

The above mentioned are among the less serious side effects of Dapsone.

Dapsone in rare and isolated cases may also cause serious and at times fatal blood or liver problems. They may be characterized by sore throat, fever, pale skin, bruises, point-size red spots and the yellowing of the skin and eyes. If you experience any of these, stop taking Dapsone and ask for emergency medical assistance immediately.

Dapsone may also cause dangerous and fatal skin irritations. Consult your doctor if you experience this.
