Colazal Information

Colazal is a drug generically known under the name of Balsalazide. Colazal is an inflammatory suppressant and a very helpful drug in the case of patients suffering from bowel disease. This drug (Balsalazide) helps reduce the colon inflammation (through his actions, Colazal blocks the production of the chemicals which turn a healthy bowel into an overactive one). 

Colazal Indications

Colazal Warnings

Colazal and Pregnancy
Colazal has not been tested on pregnant patients (women) yet. However, studies performed on animals have shown that following a treatment with this drug during pregnancy can lead to birth defects and disorders in animals. If you are pregnant or are planning to be so soon, you should consult with your doctor before starting a treatment with this drug. It has not been clearly established whether Colazal can pass into breast milk. However, if you are breastfeeding an infant you should not start taking this medicine without consulting it with your physician.

• Pyloric stenosis – if you are suffering from this disorder, Colazal is absorbed after a prolonged period of time (therefore its effects can be delayed).

Colazal Intake Guidelines

Follow each and every one of the advices that your doctor has given you regarding your treatment with Colazal (do not deviate from any of them). Colazal Dosage

Ask your doctor to calculate the dose of Colazal that suits you best. The correct dosage varies from one person to another, as it depends on a couple of factors (among them: body weight, the disorder’s severity, etc).
The dose of Colazal normally prescribed to adults is from 750 milligram 3 times a day. This drug can be administered for up to two months (it depends on the severity of the patient’s condition).

Colazal Overdose

The symptoms of an overdose with Colazal have not been clearly established. If you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with this drug you should seek immediate medical attention (contact your local poison control center, inform your personal physician). 

Colazal Missed Dose

Colazal should be taken in or on a regular basis. If you are following a treatment with Colazal, try not to miss any of your doses. If you happen to miss one take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. You should not take in a double dose of this drug unless you are instructed by your physician to do so.

Colazal Side Effects

Among Colazal’s normal side effects are stomach pains and diarrhea. These occur because Colazal’s actions affect the body’s digestive organs (mostly the stomach).  
Colazal can also induce other side effects (more common and less serious) such as: 

• Coughing
• Bloody urine
• Constipation
• Cramps
• Heart burn
• Muscle pains
• Burning sensation or pain when urinating
• Abnormal tiredness
• Upset stomach
• Insomnia
• Jaundice
• Loss of appetite
• Dry mouth 
• Lower back pains
• Joint and muscle pains
• Fever
• Flu

These mild side effects shouldn’t stop you from continuing with your treatment. However, you should inform your doctor at once.
Other side effects may also occur when you take Colazal. Inform your physician immediately if you experience anything unusual while taking this drug.

Colazal Drug Reactions

Although Colazal is not known to interact with many drugs that are normally available in pharmacies, you should avoid taking other medicines during your treatment with Colazal, even if they are simple cough, flu or cold medicines, vitamins, minerals or other over-the-counter drugs.
