Capozide Information

Capozide is a popular drug that belongs to a wide class of drugs called thiazide diuretics (also known as water pill). Such drugs help the patient lower his or her blood pressure. They also help decrease swelling (Edema). This is achieved because water pills increase the amount of fluid (water) and the amount of salt that the patient loses during urination.

Capozide is also widely prescribed to patients who are suffering from congestive heart failure (this drug helps relieve this disorder’s bothersome symptoms). Among congestive heart failure’s most common symptoms are swelling of the legs and breath shortness.

You should avoid taking Capozide if you have allergic reactions to any type of sulfa-based medicines (this includes sulfa antibiotics), because you may develop an allergic reaction to this medicine.

Capozide is known to increase the risk of severe allergic reactions. Therefore, before you start taking Capozide, you should inform your personal physician if you have had any allergic reactions (that have involved breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue).

You may not be allowed to start a treatment with Capozide if you are suffering from any of the following medical conditions:

• Gout;
• diabetes;
• a collagen vascular disorder (for example scleroderma or systemic lupus erythematosus);
• pancreatitis;
• kidney disease;
• liver disease;
• bone marrow or blood marrow disease;
• any kind of heart disorder (or if you had a stroke);
• take potassium supplements such as (Klor-Con or K-Dur), salt substitutes, or potassium-sparing water pills (diuretics) – for example amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone), triamterene (Maxzide, Dyrenium, Dyazide);
• are following a salt-restricted diet
• if you have high levels of K in your blood.

In case you are suffering from at least one of the disorders that have been listed here, you may not be allowed to start taking Capozide or you may need dosage adjustments. Your physician should monitor your intake of this drug to see how your body reacts to the treatment.

Capozide is a category D FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this drug is known to harm a growing fetus. If it is taken during the second or the third trimesters of the pregnancy, this drug is known to cause injury and sometimes even death to the unborn child. You must not take this drug without your physician’s approval if you are pregnant or if you are planning to be so soon. It has not been clearly established whether this drug’s components can pass into breast milk. You should ask for your physician’s approval to take this medicine if you are breastfeeding an infant.

Ask your doctor how and when it is recommended that you take Capozide. You should follow each advice that your physician has given you. You can also rely on the instructions from the drug’s package. The average overdose symptoms are nausea, increased urination, vomiting, fainting, dizziness, diarrhea, fatigue, weakness, and unconsciousness.

Capozide Missed Dose

To get the proper results from your treatment with Capozide, you should take this drug regularly. If you happen to miss a dose of this drug, you should take it as soon as you recall. If it is time for another dose, you should skip the one that you have missed and continue your dosing schedule.  

Capozide Side Effects

Some of Capozide’s severe side effects are:

• allergic reactions (throat closing, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips or tongue, hives);
• abnormal fatigue or unusual bruising or bleeding;
• fainting spells;
• yellow eyes or skin;
• confusion;
• fever, a sore throat, chills;
• little urine or no urine at all;
• irregular pulse;
• increased swelling.

Other less dangerous Capozide side effects are:

• headache;
• dizziness;
• lightheadedness;
• fatigue;
• numbness or tingling of the hands, arms, legs or feet;
• excessive urine;
• muscle cramps or weakness;
• increased thirst or hunger;
• nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation or some changes in taste;
• depression or anxiety;
• itching, increased sweating, rash.

Capozide Drug Reactions

During your treatment with Capozide, you should avoid taking:

• potassium supplements;
• a salt substitute that contains potassium;
• diuretics;
• cholestyramine or colestipol;
• NSAIDs;
• oral diabetes drugs;
• tetracycline;
• lithium;
• calcium channel blockers;
• doxazosin prazosin, or terazosin;
• reserpine, guanadrel, or guanethidine;
• nitrates;
• pain relievers;
• barbiturates;
• steroid drugs.
